Dragon Quest XI S Definitive Edition gets release on Steam, PS4, and Xbox One this Winter

jcRrGhv.png

The Xbox Games Showcase has revealed that Dragon Quest XI S is leaving its exclusivity on the Nintendo Switch to join new platforms soon. On December 4th, the definitive version of Dragon Quest XI will make its way to Xbox One and Game Pass, Windows 10, PlayStation 4, and Steam. The original localization of the game launched in September 2018, and was followed up by a version with new story content, orchestral music, and a retro sprite mode a year later, of which was only available on the Nintendo Switch. Square Enix also confirmed that Dragon Quest XI S will head to the Xbox Series X as well.

Well if they milk this game into a separate title I'm going to have grab my crew and set sail among the Blackpearl. B/c I'm not buying the same game twice just for audio content... not to mention we had someone make the music mod way before the Definitive version was announced for the Switch

I get you, but it's not just audio content...

Oh I played this on Switch. Up until I got to that stupid squid boss. Made the game unplayable for me, that takes too much grinding I'm not willing to do.
that guy is piss easy. your lucky you never made it to the gloomnivoore unless you have the right gear that guy will 1 shot your whole team :P

so than it's just a complete switch port with no upgraded visuals or 4k support etc.... :gun:

I just hate the art direction. Akira Toriyama always draws the same faces. It's like a Dr Slump Gaiden.

Really. It's only this that puts me off.

I don't know if it was mentioned already, but the japanese website states that this is a direct port from the Switch version, meaning the graphics will be downgraded from the original PS4 and PC release. The only upside is better resolution and frame rates (probably 60 fps for all).

Dragon Quest XI story wise rather confusingly is actually the first game in the Erdrick Saga lol. It goes like this

(Erdrick Saga)
Dragon Quest Xi
Dragon Quest III
Dragon Quest I
Dragon Quest II

Next we have the Zenithian trilogy

Dragon Quest IV
Dragon Quest V
Dragon Quest Vi

And lastly VII VIII IX and X are all not connected to any other Dragon Quest games.

now I'm depressed, wondering if i'll ever try this game.

this is the same kinda BS that has kept me from watching the FATE anime franchise

Fate was written to be experienced in release order, not chronological order. The shows are released in a particular order for a reason -- because the plots have the greatest impact that way.

Similarly, Dragon Quest III's big twist is best experienced after Dragon Quest I and II, even though it takes place prior to them both, and the same for Dragon Quest XI's twist being best experienced after playing III. But, really, a lot of the connections are mostly vague and inessential to understanding the plots, especially in the Zenithian Trilogy where the connections are entirely in lore alone.

You could get away with playing any game in the series in any order. Just have fun with it.

To be fair this series created most of the cliche

I think it's unfair to even call Dragon Quest "cliche" at this point. Back when JRPGs were a monolith, it was more fashionable for games to have gone the route of following Final Fantasy instead of Dragon Quest. The only classic JRPG I can think of that has similarities to Dragon Quest is Lufia -- and literally only the first game.

In terms of narrative, Dragon Quest has been intentionally subverting expectations in nearly every game since the third. The nature of Alefgard as explored in DQIII, the fact your protagonist is non-human was a twist in the original NES version of DQIV, the fact that
your son is the chosen one, and not you,
in Dragon Quest V, in Dragon Quest VI
what you thought was a premonitory dream cliche was actually you remembering your real life death, AND the fact that the protagonist is the dream version of a dead prince
, Dragon Quest VIII's set-up is pretty unique, but it also returns to
having a non-human protagonist
, Dragon Quest IX' set-up of you being an angel collecting prayers is pretty unique and Dragon Quest XI does the whole "maybe being the Chosen One sucks?" deal, on top of having an
apocalypse arc.

Dragon Quest VII and Dragon Quest XI
are two JRPGs to feature a main character killed off, not a very popular decision in the genre.

In terms of gameplay, Dragon Quest is one of the few JRPGs to feature a fully fleshed-out skill tree system. This is, weirdly, not very popular in the JRPG genre and more a product of western RPGs. I can point you towards Etrian Odyssey, Nostalgia, Soma Bringer and a few others, but its the exception rather than the rule, and two of those three games are already inspired by western RPGs -- Etrian Odyssey by Wizardry and Soma Bringer by Diablo. It is also be one of the few traditional JRPGs to feature weapon attacks with unconventional areas of effect. It's one of the few JRPGs to still exist in 2020 where equipment, weapons, armor and accessories frequently double as usable items. Dragon Quest XI also has one of the most-developed "equipment raises stats besides Attack and Defense" systems in JRPGs, which is something that should be more common-place and you'd think it would be but isn't.

I think Dragon Quest's stories and gameplay frequently strike a strong balance between innovative and traditional, able to provide a fresh experience without alienating fans of the older games in the series, and I really feel like people calling it "cliche" and "played out" aren't being very fair.

I really do hope the success of Dragon Quest XIs will finally get the series the recognition it deserves
