Hacking Downgrade TWL_FRM on N3DS to use AK2i?

Is it possible to install o3ds 4.2 TWL_FRM on n3ds? The goal is to keep my AK2i alive.
I think n3ds firmware started at 7.x or 8.x.
I think you can download individual cia and spoof the version so it will install...but...

would it work?
has it been tried?
is it possible to patch TWL_FRM with the tools that have been popping up lately?

finally, if I have to retire the AK2i what is the best non-DSTWO replacement? I desire top notch compatibility and reliability.

It works, but in my experience, the DS mode has weird visual artifacts when booting (like a Venetian blind). It goes away but it's a little unnerving.
Only downgrade far enough to get it working.

oh cool! is there a guide on which cia to download and stuff? searching is yielding little results at the moment.

@zoogie it works? how? they have different title ids between o3ds and n3ds right?
