Hi is it normal for a DS charger to make a high frequency screeching noise quietly while pluged into the outlet? I just realized this morning.

uh no, why would a charger make a noise for, i would get that replaced unless you want a fire, who knows what might be wrong with it, it could short out and burn your house down.

The noise is very small, I can only hear it when I'm like 5 cm away from it. I'm thinking it is caused by the AC to DC conversion.

Can anyone plug in their ac adapter and check for me?

My DS Lite AC adapter does make a faint noise, just like every other electrical transformer, but I'd hardly call it a screech. It's more like a hum.

How old are you? I hear the screech and I am 14, my parents do not hear it.

I hear the screech is it is always less than 1 metre from my ear when using the computer. I might not be able to hear it for long if I keep listening to my iPod as much as I do.

My 1st and 3rd party charger don't make any noise.

I guess you're sharing the plug with too many devices resulting in electrical noises. Have you got a UPS device in your home? Try to connect the charger to that thing and see (or hear) what happens.

The DS uses a high frequency transistor trafo instead of the heavy, bulky electromagnetic coil voltage transformer (don't know the technical expressions in English, translating from Croatian as best I can), and those tend to have a high frequency screech, at the edge of hearing, and relatively silent. Older people can't hear it at all. One solution is to charge your DS in another room; the other is to grow old and not be able to hear it anymore [IMG]

I've always been able to pick up such noises much more easily than everyone else for some reason - the TV can be on mute but I can tell it's on from the other side of the house. I'm an adult as well, so there goes that child/high frequencies theory [IMG]

    Other stuff that makes noise:
    Router
Alarm clock (with no alarm or radio on)
...Can't think of any more right now.

I must say I've never noticed my DS/GBA chargers making any noise though.

It's not a theory - hearing declines with age (especially at the top end).

Those under 25 can hear high freqs much better than those over - hence those "mosquito" systems that are used to disperse "gangs" of kids in certain areas of the UK.

I'm over 25 and can still hear them too, even with my bad hearing.. =]

I'm 14 so this goes with the theory, my parent can't hear it.

Its normal don't worry my nokia charger bleeps and screams and yet other peoples don't. But mine and my dad's one does. When I unplug it and listen closely its screams slowly fade to nothing. Prob something to do with the transformer inside.

My hearing is bad. If a noise is both faint and high frequency, I probably can't hear it.

That might explain it then, since I'm still under 25. I know people younger than me that don't pick up on stuff like that at all though :/
