The lyrics remind me of "Leben hei├čt Leben" by Leibach, translated very badly into English. Maybe the tenselessness of the translation is supposed to mean something.

    No, wait.

    Life, mean life,
    Life, mean death,
    life mean, cry,
    Life, mean breath,
    What sense of life is?
Is not the question "but why"?
    We try.

I'm on to something here... [IMG]

    ...no, wait, I'm not [IMG]

I'd love to hear the Opus version of this.
I know it's a "hit" and all, but it's still my favorite Leibach song.

    5. Life Is Life

When we all give the power
    We all give the best
    Every minute in the hour
We don't think about the rest

And we all get the power
    We all get the best
    When everyone gives everything
    Then everyone everything will get
    Life is life!

    Life is life
When we all feel the power
    Life is life
When we all feel the pain
    Life is life
It's the feeling of the people
    Life is life
It is the feeling of the land.

When we all give the power
    We all give the best
    Every minute in the hour
We don't think about the rest
    And everyone gives everything
And every soul everyone will feel
    Life is life!

And we're all glad it's over
    We thought it would last
    Every minute of the future
Is a memory of the past
Coz' we gave all the power
    We gave all the best
    And everyone lost everything
    And perished with the rest.
    Life is life!

The English version wasn't a direct translation, but rather a new song along similar lines. And no, the song your friend butchered isn't Leibach, only reminds me of it.

You friend is kind of emo, don't you think?

The true meaning of emo, taken from urban dictionary :

emo existed in a very different form before this current wave of not emo-at-all-emo.

It's something about the meaning of life... I think.... maybe... [IMG]
Definitions change with time. Sometimes you get multiple ones. Take "indie" for example, a lot of the music that fell into that category became mainstream and kept the name, despite contradicting it's original meaning. There is no right or wrong definition, you just have to move with the times and realise which one people are talking about.

"Emo" is the bastard child of an unholy union of Goth and Grunge. What was once nihilism and teenage angst has now mutated into an orgy of Weltschmertz, and young Werthers and Wertherettes (or Wertherinas) suffer forever, tormented by the pointlessness of "it all", the meaningless toil that is life, when in the end we all die and rot; the burden of superior intelligence combined with heightened empathy, enabling them to understand the bleak world, and to feel even worse about it, and the lack of understanding by their illiterate surroundings, who lack the intellectual power to understand you, or the empathy to feel for you, or ever fathom the reasons of your gloom, nor ever experience the depths of your overwhelming mysery, for they lack the ability for either. Oh, woe is he who is I, Wobbly-headed Bob [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

    (I'm exaggerating only slightly.)

Goth traded such behaviour for elitism and fashionable alienation, grunge dissolved into "sk8er bois" and indie rockers, and left the "true emo" alone and, when not ridiculed, ignored. The phrase you're most likely to hear or utter related to "emo" is "Oh, it's a phase. (S)He'll get out of it soon. I was just like that in high school. Gosh, I wonder if I can find my poetry notebook..."
