Hey, I'm learning to be a 1337 h4x00r, and was wondering, does it have any real world uses? Other than being able to brag to all of your script kiddy friends.

Well, people tend to lock themselves out of machines from time to time, knowing how to reset (or entirely bypass) local passwords is a big help.

Also some infections will disable normal tools and you might need to use the command line or a bootable linux drive or something.

Computer repair has yet to get me head though, so if your goal is l3e7 bitches or whatever you youngin's say, stick to videogames.

Many hackers wind up working for security firms. Who better to develop anti-hacking software than former hackers?

Although most hackers get nowhere. All relevant markets are already too saturated to make it a worthwhile career path.
