Would they let you check? I'm still hunting for an exploitable n3ds or o3ds if I really can't find one and I'd like to be able to see the firmware before I buy. If they would be wary because of piracy, are there any good non piracy reasons I could tell them?

Well, I straight-up told the guys at my local one what I was hunting for and why (9.0.0 N3DS). They opened four new ones for me to check before we found one. But then again I've been going there for three years and they know me =/

They opened new ones?? That doesn't seem quite legal.

I tried finding one on 4.x when it was the version to be on, they let me look at one used system but then told me to Fuck off basically.

Gamestop employees often open new games (and probably consoles too) to use them before repackaging them as "new."

Obviously it depends on the employee you're dealing with. I got a really helpful (and cute) cashier to look for exploitable slim PS3s, but like the guy above me said, your luck will vary. You could say that the parts used were more reliable in earlier batches. That's the BS I told the cute cashier. "The earlier models have more reliable lasers and are less prone to burning out."

Bring a print out of the thread (minus the 9.0 stuff) and ask them to find a New 3DS matching the serial, if they ask why tell them you're looking for one with an IPS screen they may or may not agree to search for you though.

What thread is that? I take it an IPS screen is superior to the other?

Eh, technically it's considered untampered with since they actually didn't physically touch it with bare hands, and since Nintendo doesn't seal the boxes they ship their consoles in. Plus, like I said, they know me and the kind of crap I like to do and buy when it comes to recreational hacking, so they know I'm not trying to get them in trouble, blow up the world, etc.

I don't know. still seems pretty crazy to me. Opening a box an using something is not brand new anymore. And doesn't Nintendo put those circular stickers on their boxes?

Again, it's a fairly common practice.

I used to work for GameStop and they do indeed open new products for various reasons and then sell them as "new".

Indeed they do not. Whenever you find a new Nintendo console that has one on it, it's from the retail store themselves as a loss prevention measure. GS does not sticker them.

As long as it's still in new condition and they didn't mess with it too much, I think it's fine.

There's no store policy on firmware checking. So it depends on the store itself

It depends on where you go. I've ha do a few gamestops make excuses as to why they couldn't pull a used system from one of their baggies and turn them on

When I got my n3ds back in March/April, they helped me in my search for an exploitable n3ds because I had the list of serial numbers on my smartphone and she was happy to look through the lot for me. Sadly, the store closed a few months ago, but now I live near a mall with a gamestop in it. Still kind of sad seeing the one I've frequented since I was 16 close down.

All of the systems are factory reset, so if they allow you to turn the thing on and run through the initial set up to check the firmware is completely up to the employee at the time.

I was at a Gamestop recently that had the Persona Q system new and the employee let me check the firmware before buying it.

I went to buy new games before at gamestop and they would go to the shelf and grab an opened case, open their drawer back behind the counter and pull out a paper sleeve with the disc in it and sell it to me as new. The sticker on the case says "new" so it's new to them. I call BS. They did that to me with Tearaway for the PS Vita.

Edit: also with Little Big Planet greatest hits edition for PS3.
