If your going to mod yeah. Although Im not sure if there is a modding scene for the PS3. I suggest researching the PS3 modchiping possibility.

There's still some games coming out and there's a lot of games, yeah a lot !
In Japan, they released a red one this month.
So why not ? I think to buy a NGC just to play RE4, Def Jam Vendetta and MK again...

At the moment? That's a negative.

If he was going to mod it, that'd be more of a reason to buy a PS2 this late in the game. There are plenty of titles out there to play still. I suggest you check your local stores for some used consoles. You should be able to get the console itself for $50 at the most I'd think.

Don't bother with PS2 if you only want upcoming games. It rarely gets blockbusters now.

Instead, dig through the vast selection of used games. A must for PS2! There's many older titles that can be found at GS/EB, pawn shops, Blockbuster, eBay, etc.

I'd say the ONLY reason to get a PS2 now is if you plan to mod it.

If you like what is on there, modding or not shouldn't matter. People buy older systems and even go retro with dead ones all the time so they can pick up all their old favorites mostly on the cheap (sometimes VERY cheap.) PS2 isn't quite dead, but not much A-game stuff left happening either. Lots of great things are to be had and have even been re-released time and again in good value packages. I saw a new copy of the GTA trilogy for $30 a good week ago, and if a fan that would keep one busy for ages.

There's quite a few trilogy packs. GTA, MGS, DMC, Hitman, WWE Smackdown...

All of them are decent if not great.

PS3 games are region free, but PS2 BC of PS3 is still region locked.

Switch modded PS3 can run PS2 backups of any region (along with retail PS2 ames of any region),
but opening up a PS3 and voiding its warranty just to play PS2 backups is kinda silly IMO.

There are couple dozen PS2 games that are not out in NTSC/U, so I was thinking about getting a PS2 just to mod it and play Japanese games myself.

I think buying a brand new PS2 right now totally makes sense. Yup, this is coming from a guy who owns a PS3 with near perfect backwards compatibility.

It was around for a while, just search "PS3 switch mod" on Google, there'll be tutorials and vids and stuff.
But it'll void your PS3's warranty AFAIK.

If it doesn't void the warranty please let me know, I'm gonna mod my PS3 right away and start playing Taiko no Tatsujin and Beatmania games [IMG] US release of those games were nowhere near enough.
