I'm 15, and i play Atari, Sega Genesis, and Pacman/Galaga arcade machines. Its funny when people ask me "Yo, u play gta5 and cod?" and i'm like "Nah, I've been tampering with dip switches in my local arcade to rack up some more points in PacMan. U down to play with? *holds a ziplock bag full of quarters*" People just give me that "he's a weirdo" look.

This thread needs more specification. "Old" can mean so many things it's not even funny. :P

Let's see...last year I played molemania. Never heard about it, but was a great game nonetheless. The year before I played a bunch of farmville clones ("my farm life" franchise) that were probably about ten years old at that point. Oh, and phantasmagoria (though not very long, as it's more comical than horror at this point :P )
If "old" is just last gen, then it's pretty much exclusively what I play. :)

From what I see in this thread, it's mainly the known franchises that get the most love. I admit it's sort of to be expected (even if not a financial success, the actual good games usually have a sort of cult status).

I will play an old game only if it aged well or if there isn't a remake. It makes no sense for me to play Metal Gear for the MSX because it's garbage.

They give you the look of "he's an edgy teen", like those who say that listen to metal and hate Justin Bieber. You are nowhere special. Don't force yourself out of the gen you're currently living in just because you feel like old school is cooler. Most of the time it just isn't.

Most of the old games are horrible. Lots and lots of side scrollers. They were milking side scrollers back then.
I have every single old game on emulators just for the sake of having them and impressing people. But a lot of them are really bad.

Modern games are much better. They improved a lot of the bad things about old games.
The good games are mostly the typical ones on peoples top lists. Like DKC, Mario, Super Metroid.
The others are horrible side scrollers. Because limitations? Because it was still a new medium? I don't know but they suck.

IMO the first Metroid is nearly unplayable, between the super-stiff controls and unforgiving difficulty.

I sometimes play random SNES games from my ROM collection, and I have a relatively long backlog of retro games (mostly RPGs) that I intend to play some day.

Yes. Plenty of SNES games I just never played. There are games that seriously just hold up today like Super Metroid which I thought was great. I've played all the SNES greats but there are a few I missed. I've tried briefly but never played through Illusion of Gaia and Soul Blazer but I played Terranigma through in 2013 I think and it was great. If I'm to play a retro game these days I kind of want to play something new rather than go through Mana for the fiftieth time.

Most new games AAA are frustrating for me, personally. Too much unskippable dialog. Too much customization for customization sake. Not to say older games are free of this. I'd tend to say SNES/Genesis were a sweet spot in those regards. There are of course plenty of non-AAA games that avoid the pitfalls and plenty of Metroidvanias (if you're into those) to choose from to avoid the issue. So, for certain definitions of old, yes there's still old games I want to play. Mostly, though, I just run into things that make me realize how older hits have serious problems. Like, if I weren't such a Metroid fan, I'd probably feel the same way I feel about Wind Waker.

I would recommend Illusion of Gaia. It's much more Action-Adventure than ARPG which I think benefits the series. Other than that, be prepared for lots of unskippable dialog (ugh). And a questionable plot. :)

I liked illusion of gaia more than terranigma. Maybe because it's the first I played, of maybe because I like old civilization's myth and mysteries.
Though, I tried soul blazer 3-4 times but never managed to play more than 1 hour. maybe one day I'll play it fully.

another game I couldn't play more than 1 hour, but tried few times, is secret of evermore. I never could get into it. I don't know why, some games just don't trigger my interest enough.

Yea, Soul Blazer and Secret of Evermore were both hard for me to get into as well. I actually did finish Soul Blazer a few times but never did finish Secret of Evermore. Soul Blazer had a lot of interesting ideas, but it's honestly a bit too grindy. :/ That's in terms of ARPGs, though. Compared to most turn-based RPGs, it was a breeze. :)

I don't frequently play older games unless I'm used to them. However, I played a bunch of older stuff at a really cool event last week called Retro City Festival. I played a bunch of Halo 2 and Duck Hunt, a bit of Smash 64, and a bit of Donkey Kong Country there, and those were actually very fun.
