So I was just reading the guide on https://3ds.guide/installing-arm9loaderhax and I noticed on section IV Restoring the System it says stuff about needing to restore an EmuNAND. I've never had any hacks before now, so can you get A9LH without ever having EmuNAND or anything?

You can do the guide without having to have an emuNand, that for those moving from a menuhax setup. If it's a fresh system don't worry

Oh, ok. So when you downgrade to 2.1 after doing all the stuff you need to do on 2.1 you can update regularly and go to 11.3?

if you are on OLD3DS you can, but if you are on 2DS or NEW3DS you need to have a sysNAND backup to inject

I have no diea, if I recall properly, you have to use the nand backup to reupgrade with (keep a9lh) in check.
At least that's how I remember doing it, I haven't touched System Update since I did that to my n3ds at least
When you start the process you'll do a sysnand backup, if it says anything about emu, ignore it, emunands are a waste of time tbh
