just a tiny question as I just found the first person ever to tell me that he does not like Japan after he went there.

Usually most people I ask can't really say much about Japan they mainly ask if they eat cats and dogs -.-V

But for people who have been there I had not known a single person who said he/she didn't like it till now.
Took a friend with me who was to "scared" to go alone and he was in a really bad mood all the time and now he told me he would not ever want to come back ... mainly because he was pissed by all these chinese and korean tourists that didn't know how to behave but as well because it's all to modern and full and not close to the rural towns he has seen in some Anime ... But finding rural towns like in Anime is not that easy I guess.

I for one love it and am happy that I got my Working Holliday Visa ^^ will be staying a few month.

Never been there and won't plan to. I don't like it because of too many lights and cities there. I am not city boy, you know. I prefer country and beautiful nature with mountains. Oh yeah, their cost of living is very expensive. No, not for me. The same for Hawaii.. Oh my gosh, food and cost of living are insane there. I dont like Hawaii either.

I'm not a weeb so I'm not one of those OMG JAPAN IS AMAZING!!! sayers
I see Japan as just another country.
Indifferent about it.

I'd like to say that if the opportunity arises to go to Japan one day, I'd purely go for the scenery of Mt Fuji
Maybe the culture.

I do like asian films, more specifically the horror films they produce but anime, no thank you.

Japan is kinda overrated and while I've been there three times (Sapporo, Oita and Nagoya [went to other places but that's where I stayed]), I can very easily say that if you don't go out of Kanto, you won't really enjoy all there is to see. Take the train that runs through the country at least once and see the countryside, it's gorgeous! The time I stayed in Oita was when I went with my Kendo teacher and the students from my class, couldn't practice almost at all because the view of the lake was too amazing, lol:rofl2: Had the opposite with Sapporo, winter in bad hotel (was cold af), so I couldn't go out much to enjoy the view (was still great still). In Tokyo, you hardly see much of the life of the country (unless you search really hard in alleyways)...

I like Japan because of the accomplishments that were made there. Nintendo, Sega, Anime, sweets, and new technology is what made Japan what it is today. Also the cherry blossom trees are really beautiful. The only thing I don't like about Japan are the countless 13-17 year old weebs.

Like @DinohScene , I'm also the farthest thing from a weeb and they are just ordinary people, but I do find many parts of their culture amazing.

They are very polite and respectful which I admire greatly. In the south, People are much more polite than people in Oklahoma or Washington D.C. So seing an entire culture focused on being respectful to others is admirable.

Plus they are one of the worlds powerhouses when it comes to creating and manufacturing technology. That's something to be proud of if you ask me.

I don't think it would be a place I would choose to live in, if that is what you ask, I just don't think I could fit in very well.

I haven't been there, but I wanted to make a couple of travels to Japan this year to visit some different locations.
I hope to find some interesting places to visit, so I expect to enjoy the trip.
I also believe I would like some of the less metropolitan locations enough to come back on holidays for pleasure some other times in the future, but all of this is prejudice... I just haven't been there yet.

I went to Japan last year with family. My sister lived there because of school so she suggested we come for a trip. Living in a low density country like Iceland that's pretty much on the opposite side of the globe, Japan felt pretty chaotic in comparison. Places like Shibuya and Akihabara especially. What I like about Japan is how clean and adept everything is. There is hardly any garbage to be found on the streets, smoking is forbidden outside of smoking areas, traffic lights have like these countdown lights and bleeps for when it's green and there are like a million different subways and trains you can take to get from place to place. I really like the scenery further away from the cities as well. What I don't like about Japan, though, is how packed it is and how much noise there is all over. Also, everything has to fucking talk to you constantly, usually in this generic female voice.

TL;DR great place to visit, but wouldn't want to live there.

I don't like Japan that much, for a few reasons:

- Xenophobia (although that's slowly changing)
- The "work work work" and "be the best or nothing" culture
- The strictness of the Japanese law towards porn, mixed with the hypocrisy of everyone else (you already know what I'm referring to)
- The language barrier

While the last point is admittedly subjective, everything else makes me dislike the place. Which is a shame, because there are a ton of things to enjoy from this country and its culture.

As with others it is another country. I do find the full bore weeab and full bore technophile meet reality thing (the place still actively uses fax machines... also those looking for tech vendors will probably do best to avoid modern Akihabara and pop across the water to Shenzhen's Huaqiangbei) highly amusing, and greatly value the thoughts on people that have lived there -- the services of Japan seem behind even by US standards (and US standards are only just about in the same league as some of the ones I see in Europe and the former British Empire).
That said while they have some serious curiosities (the legal system for one) there is nothing I will especially begrudge them (thinking Russia, places which lean right into hardline Islamic based law, most dictatorships...).

Huh? New technology? I love Japan. Lived here for like 18 years. But they take shit made in America and just make it better. TVs. Computers. Microwaves. You name it. They make it better... YES! But they did NOT create it.

the services of Japan seem behind even by US standards
Again... Huh? What services are you talking about? Anything Government related (things that you need to go to city hall for) is WAY more efficient than the US will EVER be. Cable & Internet? Not even close to the US. Not in price, not in quality, and not in Quantity. Not. Even. Fucking. Close. Japan rules.

Health care? National health insurance is tiered based on Income. Because I am not Japanese, and my wife does not work, she is basically on the zero income tier. She paid $800 for a freaking titanium hip replacement with a week in the Hospital for recovery (only because she asked to stay longer until I came home from a deployment. The doc was ready to kick her out the door in 3 days... they're THAT GOOD).

The only thing they lack is the insulation (or lack thereof) in housing units. That's where Japan sucks. Too hot in the Summer, Too cold in the winter, and too damn expensive for land (the land costs more than any actual house).

And I really don't get all the comments about the "weebs". Japanese government PAYS to have children because they are in a crisis with respect to the ratio of young people to old people. There are far more old people collecting social security (in part because the health care system is just that good) than there are young people working and paying into that system.

Well Japan does have country side as well if you don't go to tokyo ^^V
and the cost of living is not high at all depending on your needs oO

like I spent ~7€ for my "hotel" a day (private room but only futon on a tatami mat) than I go to a "expensive" konbini and get a bento or a few rice balls for 3-4€ buy a 1L bottle of sparkling water for 60 cents and after midday or in the evening I make some edamame and or Rice for 1€ or go to a restaurant and eat some stuff for 2-10€ depending on whatever I like ...

I don't spent a lot of money and outside of the big cities you can get cheap flats and all...

yeah they work to much but there are already laws against this and the country is changing

but how are they strict about porn oO? have never seen so many big sex shops and such an enormous ammount of different kind of porn dvds with every possible fetish you could imagine XD

and well yeah language ... its true that most Japanese don't want to speak english even though most should be able to understand it ...

Dear person that already was there,

Where did you get that room? Did you use Airbnb or is there some other recommended method of getting a room for cheap?

Best regards,
Someone that plans to visit but is looking to spare some money.

yes mainly airbnb as it often hast the cheapest prices but depending on where you go hostels and even hotels offer very cheap places ... was once in a very good hotel in hokkaido and payed only ~14€ ...

lots of cheap hostels offer private rooms for 1000¥ a day thats ~7,80€ at least a few days back XD
but the cheap ones often do not have a internet page or are a little bit further away.

on Okinawa there is one place right in the best spot in the center of town right within the market that offers private rooms for 1000 as well XD

P.S. just write me a private message if you have more questions ;)

I like their culture and various forms of media and entertainment. Save for some exceptions, namely the extreme and gross Japanese porn. The regular stuff in comparison, where it's women with high pitch moans and pixelated censorship, fine. But putting women in a bag and vacuuming out the air, nearly suffocating them? No. Eyeball licking? No! Sexualizing things that should just stay in Tokyo Gore Police? No, fantastic Japanese movie by the way.
