So basically I just got one of those cheap Easycap USBs where you can use either composite (yellow) or S-Video to input the picture to your computer (S-Video is the better connection so trying to at least use that instead). I have my Wii hooked up via component to my TV but obviously I can't plug component into either of those sockets.

My Wii is PAL so it doesn't support S-Video out natively which is why I'm wondering if something like this actually works?

I would just buy the actual S-Video Wii cable but even though it's softmodded and I can play NTSC 60hz games fine, I think it's a hardware thing.

So just wondering if anyones used one of these and if so can possibly link to the one they have/knows works?

Thanks.

You'd have to have the Wii output interlaced. Even then... I'm not sure. I've never tried to convert down from component. In theory, it could work if it's outputting 480i. Still, you'd probably want a full converter box just in case, or just get a better capture card.

Yep, I'm thinking a SCART RGB > S-Video is probably gonna be the better option (still interlaced of course but still better than composite).

Unless someone can confirm if S-Video will work on a PAL Wii, unless it's a hardware.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.

I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way

Just give it a try, but honestly if you have a 3DS you can play DS games without a card just off the internal SD card
