So, I'm aware this is a very controversial topic to talk about on this forum, but I felt the need to bring this up, because we've seriously gotta put an end to this.

If you're somehow living under a rock, I'll explain what's been going on with the community as of late. So, as you know, there was an incident regarding a good friend of mine, DarkFlareGames, having his NTR Code leaked online & available to the public. This caused many CFW Users to be able to FTW/FTL Hack on MK7 online. As someone who plays MK7 [very] religiously, this actually hurt me very much, because nowadays, whenever I ask for a legit match online with someone from Discord, per se, they don't wanna do anything but hack & just make the game unplayable for me. I know most people don't hack online, & that's fine, but it seems nowadays, I can't ever catch a break with hackers at all. I simply don't play the game anymore because of this reason.

However, that's not the main focus of what I wanna talk about today. I can guarantee you; about a majority of us are guilty of getting CFW or Homebrew on this forum. Some of us are devs, some of us just like Homebrew; we're all different people. However, with myself being a dev, I'm very conscious of what could potentially pose a threat to other people's gaming experiences. I'm not blaming Flare at all by any means; he wasn't at fault for what he did. What I'm trying to say here is that we as devs have created an endless loop of suffering for any legit 3DS owners & even CFW users, for that matter.

It starts like this: dev makes getting CFW easier; people get it. Dev gets a potentially dangerous code leaked; people use it. People start getting banned; devs explain how to unban. Bingo. Endless loop created.

Now, I'm not against hacking by any means. I do it, too. But, it's only limited to minor tweaks; not game-breaking tweaks. However, we as devs have gotta be smarter about what we do. As I've learned, if someone wants to be a dick, let them suffer, because soon, they're gonna bring their asses to every god damn source trying to figure out a remedy as to why they're banned, or get their 3DS bricked. That being said, 97% of this community are just a bunch of scumbags wanting free games when we all know what happens to piraters. Not only that, the amount of rudeness these people treat these devs actually hurts my fucking soul. However, I'm not gonna let it get to me, because it's not worth getting mad over something silly.

Anyways, what are your thoughts on the situation? Are my points flawed? Let me know what you think.

    Cheers,
    Merch

The very nature of the whole hacking scene is to make our way around limitations so that we can do what we want with the hardware that we own (and the software running on that hardware.)

IMO the scope of this goes beyond the hacking scene and to human nature - when told no, we want to go ahead and do what we want anyways. Getting banned online is a good thing when it happens for legitimate reasons. I don't care how badly said person feels afterwards or how angry they may get. Rules are rules and if someone can't handle them being enforced then they shouldn't have bothered to try and work around them in the first place.

Because of those things, I'm not sure there's anything we can do in the long run to prevent people from doing what they want.

Honestly it's people that play online with hacks that give hackers a bad rep, There's a fine line between ass holes and hackers.

Yeah you're right. But I don't hack online, it makes things less enjoyable. Plus when I hack or use a cheat code on game, I feel a bit guilty for some reason, I don't know why.

I can get behind this. It's funny how just rebellion is still a common issue that we as people still deal with. I feel as if there's no real way to stop this, so I can totally agree on everything you say there.

I do feel guilty if I hack online in Mario Kart 7. I've only done it once, & I don't think I'll ever do it again, because the guilt I felt from doing that just made me feel like I was given too much power.

I think online hacking in general is a bad thing. Nobody I know wants to be beaten because someone else cheated, and even if they aren't playing to win and just messing around that's one player less who is playing legitimately and can ruin the experience.

Hacking something just for fun offline or with friends can be great, if its what everyone involved wants to be doing. For example, I find playing 9999cc MK7 in single player is a lot of fun. (The cpu can't handle it well. XD) However, if someone played against me with 9999cc online I'd just be mad that they cheated. It can very easily ruin the experience for everyone else when hacking online - even if the hacker is having a great time, everyone else might not be.

Hacking is best left for fun in single player or local play, but online where other people don't want your hacks...
Now, if it was something like an organized hack race, that would be fine to me if everybody wanted to hack - then whatever game it is still comes down to skill, just now a modified game.

Overall, voluntary participation is something I think has potential, but being crushed by random cheaters is just annoying and can ruin any game, and unfortunately the cheaters would make up a far larger portion of any online hacking as far as I can tell.

MK online cheating has always been considered a bad thing, and I agree with it. I've never done MK online hacks and will never do. MK7 has a great online playability which as well as with MKW gets spoiled when someone doing item-hacking appears. If you really want to explore other playabilites possible only with hacks or can't stand trollers, get a group of people and make a community (was about to say room... boy, too much mkw online...)

It's a shame, too. Great game for online; made many people rage quit sometimes, & now, the rage has turned into distastefulness.

    Also, nice meme.

Bullshit. This is one of the plugins he's selling, no?

The only thing worse than hacking to give yourself an unfair advantage online, is selling hacks so others can cheat online. The kid is morally bankrupt.

I'd leak the plugin myself if I wasn't so against cheating online.

    Yeah, nothing. That's the problem.

    Welcome to the 3DS scene.

It's disgusting. I can think of close to a dozen extremely talented devs who have either left the scene completely, or who have retired from the public scene choosing to keep their work private.

It kinda sounds like you're mad, and that's perfectly reasonable.

Yeah, except we don't own the software.

The L in EULA stands for license. We own a license to use the software as it is intended to be used. We all agreed to the conditions of the EULA when we setup our 3DS for the first time.

As such, we all agreed if we violated that agreement that Nintendo could take whatever action they see fit. As many discovered recently, that action was banning users from their online services.

Now I'm certainly not against hacking consoles and installing CFW, but please don't do it thinking you're entitled to do so. You're not.

This sums up how I feel. I will admit to be piratey scum when it comes to acquiring games, but you will never see me cheating in them.

Anyone who hacks in public matches deserves a punch to the dick.
You're ruining the game for everybody, and it even leads some people to think that anyone with CFW is a cheater ( this has happened to me ).

I can see your standpoint on this. There may have been a couple of flaws on my part, which I did state that you guys are free to correct me on anything if it's flawed, but I'm wholeheartedly going to say that I agree with you & everything you stand by.

We as 3DS Modders all are, honestly. Yeah, piraters, cheaters, & people who use the Internet & software irresponsibly get what they deserve, but you can't just go whaling on someone for it, because it's not in our nature to think that these kinds of people are innocent. I watched a movie called The Shack in April; really amazing movie & touching story (it's biblical & stuff like that, so I'm sorry if I offend anyone not of that religion). I'm gonna try to stay spoiler-free, but one of the key points that they touched on in the movie is that we as humans are so quick to judge those who do wrongdoings to us, but we never have the thought of just forgiving them, because most likely, they don't know any better. It's one thing to hate haters, but it's another to love haters, & that's why I'm saying this. Now, I'm not for anyone cheating, because it's still wrong, but if it's done in rapid succession & it's out of our control, let them suffer, because the wages of sin is death (not that cheating in video games is a sin, but coveting/stealing is; thus, leading into pirates & cheaters to some extent).

Once again, life sucks dick. If I've learned things from Einstein, it's that only 3 things are infinite: the universe, human stupidity, & the amount of Zubats in Dark Cave. We can't eliminate it even if we tried. Even if you sent a nuke to each individual idiot in the human race, it's still gonna be embedded in people's brains & bring a new wave of idiocy. That being said, if you were to even attempt to do that, you'd wipe out the entire human race, because we're all dumb at some point in our lives. But, yeah. It's something we just have to deal with for infinity or until Earth just runs out of carrying capacity in 2050.

If its single player, (or if all people involved approve) go for it. However, if your not doing under those two conditions, fuck you.

I think it should only be done with friends and family who know that you are hacking for fun than just be that one guy using constant blue shells and bullet bills in mario kart 7 multiplayer with randoms

To each his own, then. If you prefer offline play, I won't judge you.

Everyone pretty much feels the same way.

I have a sister who used to play Mario Kart with me all the time. We owned Mario Kart DS & Wii, & never once did we have the ability to go online at all, because our parents put a passcode on the Wii, & we didn't have WEP Encryption on our routers for the DS. So, we never really had the chance to experience online, & it was probably a good thing that they did that, because they were very concerned about the online features leaking their location; plus, it was probably best to stay away from hackers. Years later; sister declined from the gaming scene, & I now have Mario Kart 7. 100%'d the game, & loved going online. 3DS got stolen. Got a couple of new ones & installed CFW on them, & that brings us to today.

TL;DR: My sister would kill me if I hacked against her & I would never plan on doing such things.
