Digitimes: Nintendo NX mass production delayed to early 2017, to add VR.

The sources pointed out that the Nintendo NX combines the video gaming experience with the mobile gaming experience. The device features a 5- to 7-inch display, controller and joystick for users to play as a mobile gaming product, but it is also able to connect to a TV for users to play as a video game system. Nintendo is now planning to add VR function to the device to satisfy the popular trend in the gaming market.

These guys know what goes through production in the factories that Nintendo uses to produce hardware, they have some inside information, it also suggests it's going to be a hybrid device. Could turn out quite interesting if true, that they want to compete in the VR field.

Normally I would say "the NX is supposed to be a mobile platform, it already has all the components needed for VR (i.e. motion sensing and a screen), all it needs is a $3 Google Cardboard type add-on to have VR", but this is Nintendo we're talking about so it's going to be some neither here nor there failure that increases the end price by $100.

The NX will have VR but the glasses will br 3d (images pop out of glasses) so then when you put it on everything is blurry

Ugh the fact that VR is just being tacked on as an add-on sucks. Just like the 3D was an afterthought for the 3DS and the gamepad for the Wii U, it will most likely serve to do not much else than raise the price if the console and not help immersion in any way.

I don't see any benefit from this. Tacked-on 'features' are almost always useless - of the handful of games that used the Sixaxis/DS3 motion controls, how many of them actually did it well? Motorstorm was nearly unplayable.

I don't see anything wrong with the possibility of Cardboard-style VR, as long as it's entirely optional and not even included with the base system, but the fact that they could be delaying production to add VR suggests something more substantial. What's worse is that as it is it'll probably barely compete with the PS4/Xbone specs-wise while both Sony and MS pump out updated current.5-gen systems, and while Nintendo needs 3rd-party support to stay competitive hastily rushing VR support like MS isn't the solution.

If it's really a hybrid device... then yeah VR is integrated into next android and you're gonna have your NX put in a headset I would guess.

Didn't Nintendo say it was not gonna be VR a while back though? I'll wait till there is actual showing of the device before believing everything people write as articles to get those clicks.

They said it wasn't fun. Perhaps they made it more fun.

I'm sure Nintendo has been testing and exploring VR options under their roof, like all big tech companies you R&D all the time. Now the question is what kinda VR is it, google cardboard or an expensive headset.

With the 3DS turning on 3D at least bumped up the resolution and color reproduction of the screen. This could be neat but if I want VR in Nintendo games I'll stick with Dolphin's implementation. I don't imagine the NX is going to be that powerful of a console and trying to tack this on at the last second is just going to exacerbate that.
