I know that there are at least two versions of the non XL old 3DS.

I've heard that there are systems with different types of motherboards, and I've seen systems with two obviously different screens. They're not IPS.

    Lastly, there's this. 2021879-3ds_weiss_japan_2.jpg

Now I'm curious on every type of 3DS there is.

Why does the white one look shorter and fatter?

    Is it even a thing?

from what ice found it seems like only the ice white model as is in the picture you posted is different. I havent heard of any other wonky models other than that.

I know there is a smaller Aqua Blue 3DS. I've seen comparison photos between the new 3DS and the old 3DS, and my Aqua Blue is pretty much the same size as the standard new 3DS, even though it didn't reflect this in the pictures.

    And it wasn't a new 3DS XL.

I had an ice white model (Mario 3d Land bundle), bought a green Zelda case for it, and 2 years later it also fits perfectly a pink one that came wth 2.1...

Definitely a prototype or demo unit, else case manufacturers would probably have noticed!

By the way, at or soon after the 2DS launch, they started using slightly thinner wire in the official chargers :)

Looks like one of those "retail-like" dev units, used in kiosks.

there is at least 2 different o3ds revisions
    2 different o3ds xl revisions
    2 different 2ds revisions

o3ds has a board revision with the CLK point on the reverse side and IR daughterboard built into the mainboard

there is a o3ds xl that has the IR board built into the main board

and there is a 2ds with the wifi board built into the main board and it also used the newer 1.8GB nand chips used on n3ds consoles although i think it was still only using the 900mb nand partition rather than 1.2gb that the n3ds consoles use

those are the 3 noticeable revisions to the main board I have seen but there is also a few other revisions that I have not noticed the difference on, the motherboard has a model code like CTR-CPU-01, CTR-CPU-02, CTR-CPU-40
im assuming the second number (01->02) is minor changes i.e different resistor values or something, whilst the first number(01-40) would signify a big change i.e integrating the IR board

but most of the time there is no real external difference I have noticed between the revisions
