I tried installing an SX-Lite the other day. It looked like I destroyed part of the modchip. Traces are exposed and solder is shorting the solder point and the trace. The Switch Lite still turns on but I have not tested it for more than a minute because the thermal paste is gone. Is this modchip salvageable? If not then what options are available to me?

Get out your multimeter and start probing. :)
It looks like 1 of the wires goes from the left connection to the right part of SP1.
I presume the left part of the SP1 also is connected.
See if they are not shorted.

I don't have access to a multimeter right now but if they are shorted am I screwed? Do the cloned chips on Taobao I've heard about work? At this stage I think it's best to ask a phone repair man to install it for me but if the chip itself is broken then I'm wasting my money on his services.

Get some soldering wick, clean up the blob and if you really did mess up a trace, you can cover it up with some solder mask or, if push comes to shove, a bit of nailpolish. If you don’t have either, kapton tape works well enough, but I never trust that the adhesive will hold in the long term.

I found someone who installed it for me. He charged a lot, especially considering I supplied the (mostly intact) modchip and thermal paste. He knows that I can't to it myself or find someone else so he can get away with charging a lot. He did a good job though.

Some of the mobile repair chain stores I went to said they have a no modchip policy. I suppose head office decided they are not willing to risk getting sued by a gaming giant.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way

Just give it a try, but honestly if you have a 3DS you can play DS games without a card just off the internal SD card
