Development build of Far Cry 1 discovered on OG Xbox development kit

img.jpg

An interesting discovery for both video game preservationists and Far Cry enthusiasts. A Reddit member who goes by "New_Strategy5261" uncovered an early development build of the first installment of Far Cry on an Original Xbox development kit that they recently acquired. The devkit belonged to the German developer known as "Crytek," who are well-known for their work on the Far Cry and Crysis franchises.

The build in question is dated October 27, 2005, just a month after "Far Cry Instincts" had been released, and was an attempt at porting the first Far Cry to the Original Xbox, only to have been scrapped at the last minute as the Xbox 360 was launching in both the United States and Europe.

It's pretty obvious this build was made to see how feasible a port of Far Cry would be, but I'd imagine that even with the extra memory of a dev kit, I'd say it'd be hard to make this run well.

I know there are mods to add the extra 64MB RAM, not practical for most people but I can imagine someone uploading footage to Youtube.

I've never actually played through Far Cry, but I'm intrigued. I'd like to know how well the OG Xbox could run the original Far Cry, since it was another game that required serious hardware to run well (back in the day).

I don't recommend releasing the source code of Far Cry, if it hasn't happened yet. Someone will try to port it to the Dreamcast.

It'll get reverse engineered at some point. We know how ports go.
