I heard that line in a Seinfeld episode
    Jerry's Mom said it!
It was an episode about how old people steal...lol
But really it's an ethical question about if it's not stealing if it's something you need?
    Let the debating begin

To be honest, I don't blame people who steal food or necessities because they cannot afford it. I know many people are going to say well, why don't they work?

It's not like we know their own personal issues and what they go through. I'm sure no one wants to put themselves in stealing situations unless they have to.

It depends on how do you need it?
Like you need a Louis Vuitton purse? Or like how you need bread?

even if you are really desesperate and in need. it is still stealing.
stealing means, to take something from someone without their concern\permission.
no matter what, if the other person doesn't agree with giving something to you and you take it, it is stealing.
    there is no big discussion...

If you don't rightfully own it or have permission to use it, then yes it's stealing even if you need it.

Well as far as I know in Germany there is actually a difference in Stealing and Stealing if you might starve if you would not do it BUT still both is forbidden !

I fell like I need to link this http://www.debate.org/opinions/is-i...-only-means-by-which-the-food-may-be-obtained

    and
this is something none of us understand till we've been there ourselves with those feelings of need

    "Walk in another's shoes"

Which reminds me of some indigenous communities that think of what everyone needs in total not such an "everyman for himself state of mind". That "everyman for himself state of mind" divides us and puts us at odds with each other and ourselves

Yes that's true but at the same time need is often considered for sentencing/punishment however.

    Between insane and insecure
Theft is theft, even if it's something someone needs.
Personally I find if you need to steal to live, then you need to find the root of the problem and work on that. I am not trying to sound mean, but if someone doesn't have the money for food, there are programs out there to help like food pantries, food stamps, ect. People shouldn't go hungry, but they also shouldn't have to resort to stealing either.

Every man for himself is the reason why homelessness is becoming quite common. People just like to be self righteous about everything. Yes we know it's stealing, but I'm sure there's a big difference between stealing something unnecessary and stealing food because you're starving to death.

Yes but I guess the answer is it doesn't change the crime but I does the punishment

your questions is about the morals, not the word "stealing" and now i see more what you mean.

yes, no matter what you need no matter how desesperate you are, it is stealing.
however, moral is totally a different thing.
should you be blamed for having hungry and other person doesn't share his buffet with you?
some people even agree the one with the buffet is the one to be blamed. this is the real deal. and the debate.
the way you wrote the question made me think you are questioning the word itself and what is stealing... however you are asking about who is guilt when someone steals something in need...

This is definitely an ethical debate regarding more than stealing and could be considered also an moral debate but am curious do they let the elderly off the hook more than middle aged or youth?

Stealing is ultimately dependent on the reaction from the offended party. If you define stealing by strict rules then you have many problems.
Also "needs" are food, clothing and shelter, if you come home one day and find a hobo sitting in your living room because he was freezing in the snow outside, what do you do?
