Hideo Kojima's first game since going independent, Death Stranding, is now available on Xbox Series X|S. Death Stranding Director's Cut's Xbox launch arrives in time for the original game's 5th anniversary and Xbox players can purchase the game at a 50% discount for a limited time.

“It is my pleasure to finally announce that DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR’S CUT will be delivered to Xbox players," Hideo Kojima said. "I would like to thank all the fans who have stayed connected with us as well as everyone in the Xbox community who have been patiently waiting. KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS (DEATH STRANDING) will continue to connect more and more players around the world, so please stay tuned.”

Along with this launch, Kojima Productions also announced that it now has full ownership of the DEATH STRANDING IP.

To be honest, I still haven't played this game, and all I ever hear about it is that it's a third person walking simulator. Good for Xbox owners, though.

I think it's great when devs have full control over their own creations, but what does Kojima Productions completely owning Death Stranding do for a franchise with (essentially) one game?

Most disappointing video game of all time for me and I've been playing since NES was the hottest console around. I beat every Hideo Kojima game when he was under Konami, even Policenauts which never came to America. He always knew how to tell a good story, and I won't say he fails here, but the thing he was best at was gameplay. I just was not a fan of lugging around packages from one place to another like a postal worker all the time. And that's the majority of what you do in the game. I also thought it was stupid that you build a bridge and get likes like Facebook, I hate Facebook.

Interesting. I really liked Snatcher back in the day. Not only was it US only, but the Sega CD version is arguably the best version. Policenauts was the spiritual successor, and the fan project was well-received (and long-awaited).

For Metal Gear Solid, 1-3 are my favorites. 4 and 5 felt like games from different franchises. A lot of MGS4's dialog has aged like milk.

It's a shame Death Stranding wasn't the type of game to get people talking, considering the legacy. Maybe Kojima is the type that works best under restrictions set by his employers?

If you worked hard on a game with a big vision you cared deeply about, you'd probably want to have full ownership of it too, even if it's a lot less popular and less understood than metal gear.

This also ensures DS2 can go to xbox and even steam right away (or at least a year later if sony moneyhatted again), and lastly it gives kojipro complete creative control going forward. It's a huge W all around

Yeah, we've seen a lot of situations where the IP holder is the publisher or some other entity, despite the devs doing the creative heavylifting. It's a tradeoff some devs take for work or a chance to get their game published.

I guess I was thinking that Kojima's an ideas guy, so any one IP being owned by another company wouldn't slow him down. Since he's going for a sequel, it's a good thing the rights remain with the original dev.

It definitely got people talking when it released. It's just that it turned out to be quite polarising. There are also plenty of people that think it's an amazing experience, so it's worth trying for yourself to see which side you land on.

The world needed more of the Amazon Delivery Guy Simulator.

Kojima is a hack
This. So overrated.

I think Death Stranding is a textbook case of why creative types generally shouldn't be left alone in charge and need people to rein them in and canalize their ideas.

Going WHAT? HAHAHAHAHA! Sony produced published his game since they have money for burning to satisfy Kojima's obsession with Hollywood budget cinematic games (Konami kicking him out was the only good thing Konami did back then).
