Cuphead is getting an animated show on Netflix

dmSIDfM.png

When it comes to Cuphead, one of its most-acclaimed features was its animation, which had painstaking levels of effort put in to perfectly mimic the style of retro cartoons. That's why it might be fitting to learn that Netflix has will be making an animated series based on the franchise. Titled "The Cuphead Show", the cartoon is currently in production at Netflix, with King Features Syndicate in charge of the animation. Netflix says the animated series will, "expand the world and characters of Cuphead, with an animation style inspired by the classic Fleischer cartoons from the 1930s". Dave Wasson (previous works include modern Mickey Mouse Shorts) and Cosmo Segurson, (recently worked on Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling) will be co-executive producers on the show.

"inspired"...
99% that they will use standard (modern) animation techniques instead of the '30 ones, so probably the style and the overall quality will be lower compared to the videogame hand-drawn graphics...

I love it when people talk about things they have no experience with and haven't happened yet.

Ain't nothing about a modern toolset that prevents rubber hose style animation lol. It'll just be faster to produce, which also puts paid to your 'lower quality' claims.

Art directors are also a thing, and I'm sure they'll be working very closely with the comp guys to make it look authentic.

This could be horrible or beautiful

This I can agree with heh.

The Cuphead Show? Really, I wonder how it will look compared to Merrie Melodies or Silly symphonies. Will they be able to pull off the classic film effect in HD, or will it look like a mockery of such? Since King is involved, it might work, but only time will tell.

That's pretty much a given. No animated series could feature the quality of animation shown in the game without a Disney feature budget and hefty development time. I'd wager this will be your usual Flash based, motion tweened animation, which can be great if done well (see the recent Mickey Mouse cartoons).
From IGN's interview of Chad Moldenhauer:
`"The current goal is to stay as far away from [computer-assisted] puppeteer animation as possible" "The idea will still be that every frame is hand-drawn" but probably not on paper. "It's going to be hand-drawn but digitally. 'Tradigital'"

Cuphead? Of all videogames out there, you decide to make an animated series of CUPHEAD??

The same, high quality, 24 frame-per-second animation video-game that won multiple awards and popularity for the quality of its animation? THAT CUPHEAD??

This is a train wreck waiting to happen. The budget and time-frame required to make something like this is astronomical.

Let's watch Netflix animate this crap in flash quality, and use 3D scenes when the busy parts of the show come in...

I'm sorry Netflix. I saw what you did with plenty of other animated shows. You can keep this. Either make this something incredible or don't bother tarnishing it.

Ah, damnit. I was thinking of an anime for Guilty Gear, especially given the recent ones and their usage essentially getting ArcSys a lot more attention than I think they've ever got before!

Anyone remember this?

Then we get this:

I remember feeling a little wet in the pants after seeing that! XD

Oh god, please don't let this suffer from Dragonball Syndrome where the animation looked great hand drawn, and then modern animation techniques made it look like complete garbage.
Aside from that I'm super pumped to watch this :D
I don't think it's modern animation techniques that made Dragonball look bad. I think it's the really dated art style that doesn't look good in HD, especially compared to lots of modern anime.

I like how they're making it sound like a super original idea. A lot of animation and art is done this way. It's a lot cheaper and more efficient to draw your storyboard out, do key frames, then the rest. A lot of cartoons do this. Puppet/cutout/skeletal animation are a completely different beast.
