As I mentioned elsewhere I finished The Wire last night and I am now in the process of finding something else to watch, no easy feat given my student/low work hours over the last few years.

None the less a start.

The Wire: 5 Series (finished), 10-13 episodes at an hour each.
Plain awesome. DVDs out in R1 and R2, series 1-3 in R4.
Deals with one case over an entire series and the bureaucracy very well.
Set in Baltimore, US

The Shield: 7 series (7 currently airing). Usually 13 or so episodes a series, 40 minutes with some longer episodes on DVD.
Also fantastic. Deals with corrupt cop in charge of a special team and the people around him.
DVDs a bit odd (different releases and delayed across various regions). Go with Sony if you can.
Do yourself a favour and grab Wins and Losses (series 5 DVD and in various other places, deals with the events in between series 5 and 6.
Set in Los Angeles.

Spooks (MI5 stateside): 7 series, 6 aired and on DVD. 7 on the way (next month or so depending on what I read). US people grab the DVDs or UK releases as adverts are more important the footage and to break the hour by hour "routine" would be sacrilege apparently.
10 or so episodes per series at an hour long each.
One of the few things I like from the BBC these days.
MI5 is one of the internal security services for the UK (somewhere between FBI and CIA if you want to compare to the US).
Set mainly in the UK.
Ignore the code 9 spinoff unless you are really bored (and I mean really bored: clean your house/room before settling into this).

Hustle 4 series (not sure about 5 right now) 6 episodes per series.
The other thing I like from the BBC.
Follows a group of con artists who specialise in "long-cons".
Set mainly in the UK but there are a couple of US based episodes.

I will leave others to write up shows (if you are going to include classic shows please let them have a DVD release) but others I watch include
NCIS (about my only hope for something decent this year). NCIS is the US navy criminal investigations people. If you can (no DVD releases yet) grab JAG series 8 episodes 20 and 21 (Ice Queen and Meltdown) as they are the pilot episodes.
Set all over the US and some elsewhere.

Law and order, also 3 spinoffs with 1 now cancelled.
Shows are normally two halves: investigation and the resultant legal wranglings.
Even though it is set way back the early series are fantastic.

CSI: I can not be bothered with the new york spinoff at all and the others will have to have something special to make me want to watch a later series.

And a final request.
A couple of years back a watched a US show on e4 (late at night so it is bound to be a repeat) or something here in the UK about an FBI investigation into a crime boss with a big focus on the undercover stuff (mainly in a brothel). If I could get a name that would be great.

Did it look like it was made in the 80's? Sounds like it could be the show Wiseguy.

I was partial to CSI Miami for quite some time before I realized that it was the same senseless plots repackaged over and over again. At which point I moved on to regular CSI, which is quite a bit more gritty and surreal and I'm overall more fond of it these days, though I stopped keeping up. CSI New York is absolute garbage, don't ask me why, I couldn't tell you, I just can't watch it at all.

Outside of that I watch Bones, which I'm fond of. It's not the best show in the world, but it's amusing and I love the interactions of the various main characters. Once upon a time I also watched "Justice" which was on FOX before they canceled it, as they do everything. Now I get my law drama from Eli Stone. I've only seen a handful of episodes, but I enjoy it. Finally I recently started watching Fringe. It grows on me more and more with each episode.

Some of those aren't strictly police-type shows, but they all deal with the law in some way or another.

The Mentalist just piloted this week, looks somewhat promising - a sorta CSI filming quality/style with a reformed con-man (a mentalist) as the lead. A show that comes to mind as being popular, finished (thus likely available on DVD) and somewhat crime is JAG. I've been trying to catch an episode of Crime 360, a real-life kinda crime thing, but haven't had the chance yet. One that is really popular up here, but I can't stand for some odd reason is called Cold Squad.

Then there are the Law and Order and it's more recent spinoffs/wannabees... Raising the Bar, NYPD Blue, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit

Saving Grace? Seen it a couple times, spunky short chick cop with a lisp along with a supernatural element to the show... didn't seem all that bad.

Sorry Fast6191, kinda a blank but maybe there is something there you haven't tried yet... can't say crime shows are my genre of choice (I lean more towards shows like Supernatural, the new battlestar galactica or Heroes when I have a choice), but I'd watch CSI if it's on at 4am or whenever I have time for TV browsing.

edit:/ Ace Gunman: heh, bones was one of the first ones I thought of, I like it to a degree - but the show strikes me as more cheese than Fast seems to like (it's not really crime/drama but smithsonian anthropology/comic releif.)

edit2:/ almost forgot, it's got crime... gotta love that twisted Prison Break

Definitely modern, I caught it about 3 years ago now but knowing E4 that means very little.

Could it have been something called Falcone? It was made around 1990.

Shame The Wire has finished for good. I really enjoyed the show, it was smart, had great characters and portrayed the way the operations were run really well. I'm hoping there'll be another show of similar quality to fill it's place at some point. I'm just about to watch this weeks Fringe. It's kind of crime based but nothing like a typical crime show. It's more about crazy scientific theories then the methodology.

I can recommend Wiseguy if you haven't seen it. It was made in the 80's but it's full of great acting and the story is intense. It's a FBI going undercover in the mafia show, I think it's Vincent Spano that's the main star. Excellent viewing.

If you don't mind a bit of comedy with your detecting then Psych and Monk are pretty fun. The Mentalist is a show that's just started that's very similar to Psych but without the comedy. About a guy with really acute observational powers who's a detective for the cops.

Criminal Minds seasons 1 and 2 I'd definitely recommend. Great characters, gripping stories and smart writing. I kind of prefer it over CSI because I really enjoy all the psychology behind the case solving and it just seems to have a more realistic edge to it then the CSI shows. Season 3 with Joe Montagna is really good but he seems less suited to the profiler role than Mandy Pantinkan did. New season starts tonight though and from the fall previews it looks like it's gonna be a fantastic season.

I guess you've been through the obligatory classics like Hill Street Blues and Cracker and stuff?

I like English crime shows.
Midsomer Murders, Inspector Rebus, A Touch of Frost.

Also, Rosemary and Thyme, Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot. I love those, they're corny but fun.

Life On Mars (UK one, the US pilot was really poor)
Ashes To Ashes (ok nowhere near as good as Life On Mars but I liked it)
Dexter
Messiah
NYPD Blue
Cracker

That's probably it, there might be a couple of others but I can't think of them right now. I did use to like The Bill, but then they turned it into a fucking soap & made it an hour long.

EDIT: I think Jonathan Creek counts, I recommend that to you Veho.

Dexter is my all time tops crime-suspense-drama show. Its on Showtime, Season 3 is starting up this sunday (but ep 1 was previewed, and is available anywhere online.) START AT THE BEGINNING. There are important things throughout the entire show's run, so far, that you need to know.

Here's a quick synopsis of the show, via IMDb.

"During the day, Dexter Morgan is a jovial employee in the Miami Metropolitan Police Department's crime lab, but his meticulously crafted life masks his true nature. In reality Dexter is a disciplined and murderous psychopath (a self-admitted "monster"), and he slakes his blood lust at night by carefully killing the serial killers he tracks down during the day. Based on the novels (Darkly Dreaming Dexter, Dearly Devoted Dexter and Dexter in the Dark) by Jeff Lindsay."

Its simply stunning. Highly recommended.

Ooo, i've heard of Life On Mars, but never got to see it. I'll have to check that out! Didn't really know it was a crime-drama kinda thing. Thanks!

CSI - I love all of them but I like Miami the most. Because with Horacio, you won't be fooled again. The most horrible one is True CSI. Rubbish!
NCIS - My dad used to think that NCIS is like a sister show of CSI.
Law and Order: Criminal Intent - They had a sort of "omnibus" of the most violent episodes last night. Really good show.
Criminal Minds - need I say more?

Over here it was billed as sci-fi but for me the time travel thing was just something to hook people in.

"The programme tells the story of DCI Sam Tyler of the Greater Manchester Police (played by John Simm), who, after being hit by a car in 2006, finds himself in the year 1973. There, he works for Manchester and Salford Police CID as a DI under DCI Gene Hunt (played by Philip Glenister). Over the course of the series, Tyler faces various culture clashes, most frequently regarding the differences between his modern approach to policing and the more traditional methods of his colleagues. Mixing the genres of science fiction and police procedural, the series centres around the ambiguity concerning Tyler's predicament: it is unclear whether he is insane, in a coma, or if he really has travelled back in time."

There is a lot of weirdness and that inside it but its essentially its a cop show.

Ashes To Ashes is the sequel set in the 80's but with a woman in the lead instead. Some people didn't like it, but I did.

Totally forgot about one of my favourites which started again last night, Life.

It's not a cop show in the vein of most. It's about a cop who gets framed and ends up sentenced to life in jail. Eventually DNA evidence frees him and joins the police force again. He's a very different type of character to the ones generally shown in cop dramas. Definitely recommended.

For movies: Goodfellas and Hot Fuzz would be at the top of my list... OH, and Buffalo Soldiers.

Probably not the same type of crime you're looking at - but good none the less.
