While there maybe some truth to what you say. And how much exactly I don't know. But there is definitely some overlap at the very least. 3D/CGI artists spending their time on it that coulda spend time on a real project. And perhaps multi talented developers and what not..
Who knows there is another side to this.. if it makes more money it allows them to make more real games. But I somehow doubt that.
I think instead it will start just to overtake the real gaming sector. If it is succesful or too successful. This is what we must fear as real gamers. For example sony saying there is no future PS vita 2 cuz of handheld market etc.
I would like to think most of the great developers embrace the projects they truly believe. So it's not that they are forced to be part of these projects. They are being paid too. And investing their time in something they want to see good results from. Sometimes it works better than others, but you can't really please everyone.
I believe that the developers do the great work, but customers dictate the success of the masterpiece. If customers stop buying, the project is automatically sentenced and dies. And that's something you can see everywhere not only with gaming but with any retailing products.
PS Vita is a good console, but it didn't have the same impact in numbers as PSP, for example. Probably due to the high demand of the popular DSi and 3DS consoles from Nintendo. So Sony feels forced to stop investing in this project and move on. But this doesn't mean they are not currently working in their next project for a portable console. As you know, companies this big are always thinking and planning years ahead. Same happened with Nintendo and the Wii U. But they ended up with an amazing new project when they released the Switch years after. This is already enough as a proof that they were thinking ahead when releasing the Wii U. As we know, the Wii U was not very good in sales, but as a result Nintendo developed the Switch inspired on it. The Switch is currently 3rd place in Nintendo's sales worldwide, only beaten by the Wii and NES to the date... But not for long, I would say, as they are still selling as we speak.
