As the title says does anyone think smealums exploit could enable someone to write something that could downgrade a 8.1 3ds to a firmware we have backed up?so that a hardware mod isn't needed? Or given the nature of Ssspwn. is that impossible?

Theoretically, the only way to downgrade without hardware modding would require Kernel access, something that SSSPwn explicitly does not grant.

No it's not possible. If you have a firmware backup then you should just find someone who can install the nand access mod and downgrade it
