Okay. So I set up this Wii for a family member, softmodded and all. Version 4.2 and I'm not sure, but I'm assuming the latest CFG USB loader. I set it up fine (btw using a 160GB Western Digital portable HDD) and it opened and ran its games. Cool. Only a few days later they call up saying that its does the 30 second countdown to mount and fails over and over. Now I asked if its in the right USB port and he says sure and asked if the HDD had a solid blue light to make sure its connected properly and he said sure. So what could be wrong? I set it up fine and he played it fine. What advice should I give him? Mind you he is only like 5 years old...and an hours drive away.

1 - try to turn ON the HDD like a half minute before turn on your Wii.
2 - See if the HDD is conected in the below USB

Its a portable HDD so no on/off switch. And the dude swears to me that its in the rightmost USB. Though I can't check being that I'm not over or anything.

I'm experiencing the same problems, using a Seagate 320 GB usb powered drive.
Sometimes it mounts fine, sometimes not.
Alot of unplugging, on / off of the console, til it finally kicks in and mounts.
My buddy uses a 500GB Seagate, usb powered, no problems.....
So, I think its hit or miss? or just a touchy usb connection.....
and, BTW, I set up HIS usb drive and console, so, what gives?

yeah, if you can maybe find a new USB cord. Mine wouldn't work at all, but then I switched cables and it was perfect. Thing is thought the problem Wii was fine. This is annoying. I really don't want to have to drive there.

Just tell him to play with it til it mounts, why drive if its far away?
Or tell him he needs a new usb cord, alot of stores sell em cheap.
(Which is what I may have to do).....

Gambia, The
the wii might not provide enough power for a usb-powerd drive
try with a power supply

diferent wiis might provide different amounts of power too
usb-spec only reqires >=500mA

and be carefull
many usb powered hdds are out of spec(2 usb cables for power, just drawing power instead of requesting it,..)
I blame that for the many busted wii usb ports

edit: you should be able to hear/feel the vibrations to see if it is running

    well actually
a new console won't do anything right now, because the games are still in development, that's why there are few games being released
