Penis fight over, boys!

Windows : get XP. Vista is a shoddy piece of shit, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. You'll play games the way they were designed to play.

Linux : get Ubuntu. My mother uses it. She never has to run anti virus, anti spyware, firewall or anything, she never uses the command-line, that was five years ago people. BUT, you will want linux is what you want is a STABLE WORKING ENVIRONMENT. Emphasis on WORKING : if you primarily use the open-source "big three", Openoffice, Thunderbird, Firefox, you won't feel any difference with windows except the no viruses thing. You CAN play games under linux, but there WILL be a noticeable hit in frame rates. It's NOT unplayable, but if you're a 200fps faggot, then you WILL whine about it.

Cedega. Google it. Compile it from CVS.???. Profit.

Having said that, I never managed to get it to compile. Anyone had success with that?

here are some build instructions

cd $startdir/src
# Clean old patched sources
rm -f $startdir/src/winex/tools/wrc/ppl.l $startdir/src/winex/tools/widl/ppl.l $startdir/src/winex/tools/wrc/lex.yy.c $startdir/src/winex/dlls/kernel/time.c > /dev/null 2>&1
export CVSROOT=:Pserver:cvs:[email protected]:/cvsroot
cvs login

# Get current cedega from cvs
cvs -z 3 checkout winex
echo "CVS done..."

cd $startdir/src/winex

make distclean

./setup.sh
./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --enable-opengl --with-x --enable-pthreads
make || return 1

# Create package
make prefix=$startdir/pkg/usr install
mkdir -p $startdir/pkg/etc/cedega
cp $startdir/config $startdir/pkg/etc/cedega
cp $startdir/initcfg-cedega $startdir/pkg/usr/bin

btw cedega doesn't like people compiling it from cvs, they want you to use the demo version(figures, proprietary pos

There isnt much advantage over opensource other then its free and u can look at the code

its all the same other wise, still a selective group makes it and controls it with public releases, still dont really care about ur bug reports unless its critical, blah blah
with small projects OpenSource is great, but large projects it becomes iffy

guess I'm gonna have to tell apache their doing it wrong
*goes off to warn apache*
apache is full of patients thu, not the average OS product

Thats bullshit.

"still a selective group"? Ubuntu, and the Linux kernel in general, is successful because of the hundreds of programmers who support and improve it. Open source software is developed with the end-user and community at mind, not commercial interests,

Im sorry, I would comment... but under popular demand I am forbidden from talking about any OS... (or was it just windows and mac?) :x

All I'll say is that I have used this one, but came to the point where I had no reason to use it so I went back to XP

can't we just be friends?

please trust me on this. I do know what I'm talking about with computers, I just have a hard time typing out what I want to say sometimes. Computers are my life and I may not know everything about them yet, but I plan on learning more every day.

It really hurts when I'm told that I cant talk about computers because I don't know anything about them.

If I'm wrong about something, cant everyone just tell me I'm wrong so I can learn the right way? I doubt that everyone here knew everything there is to know about computers in a blink of an eye. Why do people want to insult someone just because they are misinformed or they just didn't know?

I'm never trying to start fights, I just want to say my opinion on the topic from what I have experienced.

and lastly, I would like to say that I have built three computers myself... Not sure if it means much...

Don't worry about it Osaka. You sound like you know a fair bit and I'm sure you'll learn heaps here and other places. Some people here are a bit touchy about what OS is good and what isn't and such, best not to feed them.

A trick I learnt is to put IMO (in my opinion) next to something that people are going to argue or disagree strongly with. Opinions are never wrong

Also - when someone is on your back for spelling, grammar or something petty, it's best to ignore it because it can sometimes start flaming. If the post is offensive or you think it will start a flame war just click the report post button and a moderator will deal with it. They don't mind and prefer it to arguments about petty things.

I haven't had my coffee yet so hope that makes sense. Bit of a rant. Don't take it the wrong way I had to learn all this stuff for myself.

On topic: I don't think Ubuntu is going to be very useful for you juggernaut. Chances are you'll use it a few times then delete it. If you want something pretty get windows vista with some themes and dual boot with XP.

Also, since anyone can read the source bugs get fixed a hell of a lot faster than closed source software.

Fine then, gcc. One of the oldest and biggest projects out there, still going strong after more than a decade of development. Pretty much the most used compiler out there.

As for a small group of devs maintaining the project, without a small dedicated group of individuals working on a project it will lack direction. If you want to submit a fix then release a patch and if it is useful enough it will be incorporated into the main project or if you don't like that idea fork the project, your free to do that.
