Computer OS question...

okay, so when i get my new computer, I will wont to dual boot. I need info on all the basics and which OSs. I'm thinking: XP Home SP2 and Ubuntu. are those good? and for my XP, I am planning on the doing te upgrade thingy from my 98 SE disk, is that possible? thanks

You can clean install XP using an XP upgrade CD on a new hard drive and it will ask you to insert your 98 CD to check during the install process. Is that what you mean? Yeah XP and Ubuntu is a good choice.

Ubuntu is Linux.. There aren't games for Linux. If you want games play it on the Windows Partition/HDD

yes, you can save yourself a whole 10 dollars by getting the upgrade CD and installing win98 before installing xp...

wine is a compat layer not a replacement for windows.

Nothing, it's an option. If you're happy with Windows stay with Windows. There's no point to moving to a new OS for no reason :S Except maybe if you want some Eye-candy with beryl but thats available with any Linux distro.

I never said it was. He suggested wine, I said wine isn't very good considering the loss of frame rates. Sorry if I'm missing it but where did I write it was a replacement for windows?

As i said in my last post you can save a load of time by not installing 98. Just boot the XP upgrade CD start the install it will say this is an upgrade and it can not find a previous version of windows please insert 98/ME disk. Take out the xp one put in 98 it checks put the XP CD back in and it installs as if it is a full version disk.

He never mentioned games either but you brought it up anyway, so I brought the topic back to wine and explained what it is, a compatibility layer. Games are not wines priorities(thats why performance sucks). You want games on linux get cedega. Lets be civil and leave it at that.

Eye-Candy if you install Beryl. But to me it doesn't compensate for the loss of drivers for everything.

You missed the point. He asked if Ubuntu could run Half Life( A GAME if you didn't know
