Homebrew "communication error"upon startup with pokemon hg and ss on twilight menu++

So I've been having this problem with pokemon heart gold and now soul silver

Basically,everytime I go past the start screen with a save file I get the following message

A COMMUNICATION ERROR HAS OCCURRED

YOU WILL BE RETURNED TO THE TITLE SCREEN

PRESS THE A BUTTON


Ive been using a randomized rom and played heart gold and soul silver on my 3ds with twilight menu before perfectly fine,but after I saved after starting a new game,this message is all I've been getting,the rom works on emulators so I have no clue what's wrong

Any help will be appreciated.

I assuming you have "free" Rom Versions (not Retail/Gamecart Versions) of the Games (you are using TWiLight) ?

You maybe have (accidentially) TURNED OFF the WiFi in the TWiLight Settings or on your 3DS ?

You sure you have nothing weird on your settings? my hg and ss roms work perfectly (they aren't randomized but still)

Put them in the sd card, press play in twilight menu, profit?

I found this thread while trying to troubleshoot the same issue on my 3DS XL, which I have since fixed! I had the issue when playing a legitimate cartridge of SoulSilver and also when trying it with a ROM.

The issue ended up being that my wireless card inside my 3DS was slightly unseated. Fixing it was as simple as opening up the 3DS, gently wiggling the wireless card (I heard a small "click", like RAM makes when you set it into a motherboard slot correctly), and then closing the console back up.

I didn't think this could possibly be the issue, because my wifi seemed to work fine. However, when I went into the DS connections settings in the system settings and told it to scan for an access point, it would soft-lock and stay on a blank screen without searching for access until I hit the home button and closed the settings. If I manually inputted the details for an open-security connection, it would give me an error saying "Error: 6 Nintendo WFC Configuration Transfer", which did not help me at all.

This is speculation, but it seems to me that the DS wifi and the 3DS wifi work slightly differently, and the DS "half" of my 3DS was having an issue that prevented SoulSilver from loading. I guess SoulSilver checks to see if your console has an internet connection on boot after you've created a save, and it was erroring out at that point.

Anyway, I had such trouble finding out how to fix this issue that I wanted to come share it here, where it might help others in the future.

SoulSilver and other Gen 4 Pokemon games actually look for a nearby Wii console (or Wii U in Wii mode), in order to connect to it.

they also respond to pokémon ranger, if you're sending manaphy egg from any of the three games then they'll show up with a special menu entry to connect to pokémon ranger and receive the egg. and in dppt's case it also responds to event distributions, and will auto-unlock mystery gift if you hadn't unlocked it yet and a signal is in range (not sure if hgss responds to this considering that mystery gift is unlocked by default in hgss)

in the case of dppt mystery gift, this allowed receiving events on new save files that hadn't beaten the first gym and unlocked access to the tv station yet, which is nice
