This is how I imagine the development of this homebrew went:

"You know what would be a great idea? A comic book viewer for the DS!"

"Yes! This is just the kid of PSP application we need to rip off."

"Let's give it DLDI and WiFi support!"

"Yes. These sound like great ideas."

"But wait, rather than supporting image files or standard archives, let's make it only support a retarded proprietary!"

"That sounds wonderful, but which retarded proprietary should we use? There are so many!"

"We should make our own!"

"Wow! That's SUPER-inconvenient! They'll need to download a separate program just to re-pack images they've just unpacked. You are a genius sir!"

"But that's not all. We'll make it run on Java runtimes, no, normal java. So even if people already have java installed on their machine they'll have to go get the normal one!"

"Wow sir, you're really making people bend over backwards to look at images on their DS! Are you going to compile it for OSX or Linux?"

"I doubt it!"

"Brilliant! People will have to download two separate programs to do one's work when reading normal images shouldn't be that much to ask!"

"For good measure we should take the link to DS projects off our own website and keep the homebrew and packing program apart."

"Good idea, don't want to make things easy."

Long story short I have Java installed and still can't run the re-packaging program I shouldn't even have to bother with. I don't care how friendly the app itself is, the whole process is more than anyone should have to deal with.

I have no idea why I even try bothering with anything other than commercial games on the

, that's what the

is for.

Heran Bago is just a troll, please do not feed him. If he doesn't want to use it, there are other very easy programs that will do the same thing. But instead of finding them, he came here to bitch about this one.

Oh, and I'm not even from America/UK and can spell english words better than you. Ridiculous.

I'm not trolling. I am dead serious about the program being bad. I'm sorry if my spelling error in the thread title threw off your reading comprehension so much that you couldn't find the valid complaints in the OP.
Yes I was "bitching." I expect image file support from a modern comic book viewer and I think my complaints are valid.
e: Damn, I just got that you were a troll. You got me.

TarasSo point us to the app you programmed to remedy those issues.
Here is an app I just compiled which will view a gif titled "gif.gif" in the root directory. It's not everything I want it to do but it goes to show you how hard it is to load an image from FAT. You'll need DLDI to use it.

If you think one has to be a wine maker to critique wine then you are making a huge logical fallacy.

While I give the author an A for effort (WiFi is no small feat!), the execution's terrible.

Personally I am on board with anime_junkie. I like all my consoles n' handhelds.

About ComicBookDS, from my point of view the main issues with reading comicbook was 1) fast loading of images 2) be able to zoom to a high def version. So for every image, in jpg for example, you'd have to open it, convert it to something the ds understands, and then you'll have to make scaled down version, ect... It's really not the straightforward approach and I feel the devellopers of ComicBookDS have done so in this way.
BUT they could have made their converter into a ds program instead of a shitty java app, it seems that when DS devs have shortcomings with the devellopment they are not ashamed to jump out of the ds... See DSKara for example that is using a PHP script to handle the file created on the ds, so tu use it you have to DS -> PHP site -> DS -> PHP site -> DS

ComicBookDS is a great program! It's your spelling and grammar that are "rediculous."
quit this attitude cruddybuddy, you always get back to this argument when you have nothing more to say. You sound just like some nerd from first grade...

cruddybuddy's not a serious poster, and the 'lol' low content posts really add some much needed charm and sarcasm to otherwise "rediculous" nerd rage (this topic, for example).

You're right that it's a good approach to the DS's hardware limitations, deufeufeu. I guess I'm just spoiled, expecting dragging-and-dropping to just work with apps these days.
We're ahead of the GBA homebrew days for sure.

^^^ On the contrary, you have too much time if you go out of your way to tell someone complaining about Comic Book DS that they have too much time on their hands.
Trap sprung.

I did indeed make a spelling mistake. Editing the thread title is beyond me.

Care to make any counterpoints as to why it's good?

My counterpoint is the ease in which porn can be viewed from ComicBookDS.

couldn't you do this in like, moonshell?
It'd even be less button presses on an R4.

Comicbook DS's image format allows for higher-res pictures than Moonshell or anything else on DS. It's a bitch, but I can live with it. As for the links being removed, I think the author of this program was going to make it a commercial product and as such removed the free downloads, but I can't recall exactly what the go is there.

Also, porn on DS? The screen is tiny! I don't see the point.

I assumed re-packing was something to do with reducing the amount of space the files take up on the microSD. Comic archive files are rather large. Small file = more comics

As for Java usage, I think you're a little confused. The whole point of Java is to provide cross-platform support, so if an application runs on Java then it should run on any OS with a Java runtime installed, including Linux, etc. There is no such thing as "normal Java", chances are it just needs a later version of the runtime than the one you already have installed, or you just haven't got it set up properly.

Finally it must have DLDI, otherwise it can't retrieve the comic files from the cart

I won't go into detail about DLDI but without it the makers would have to make a diffrent version of Comicbook DS for every single flashcart on the market, and that would be a nightmare.

Having said all of that, I don't use it. The application itself is fine, but as far as I'm concerned the DS's screens are far too small for comics, all the dodging left and right just drove me nuts.

If you can't use a computer, then you don't deserve comics on your DS.

After working with simple images for my app last year, images are hard to work with on the DS. The images for comic book ds are resized and standardized. The processing power required to interpret various resolutions and formats would be pushed beyond the call of the app.

Also, the converter app does indeed work under Linux.

I dont know what it is all about, like installing of that java and application to convert images it's few minutes ( 1-3 ) , and then all you have to do is drag and drop files and click convet, is it really that hard ?
