Cliff Robertson and Rosemary Harris as Uncle Ben and Aunt May in 2002's Spider-Man.

Oscar winner Cliff Robertson died from natural causes Saturday in New York at the age of 88, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Legend has it that JFK himself selected Robertson to portray him in the biopic PT-109, but the actor is probably best known to the current generation of IGN readers for his role as Uncle Ben Parker in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy.

Robertson's film credits include his Best Actor- winning turn in 1968's Charly, as well as Gidget, Underworld U.S.A., The Best Man, The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid, Three Days of the Condor, Midway, Obsession, Star 80 (as Hugh Hefner), Brainstorm, Wind and Escape From L.A.

In addition to his work on the big screen, Robertson also had several notable TV credits including stints on The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits, and as the villain "Shame" in the classic Batman series. He portrayed automobile icon Henry Ford in a 1987 telepic.[/p]

At first I was like "Who the hell is Cliff Robertson?" then saw the pic...sad.

I didn't know who he was either lol. But damn, he would've been 79 in Spider Man, and he looked really good for his age in that...just noticing that now..

    God damn it, Spider-Man!

    Edit:

And of course, sorry to hear about his loss. Still, he lived a good, long life, so there is a bright side.

That's a shame; I saw the news yesterday and I recognised him by the accompanying picture rather than the name initially, though the name did seem familiar.
