the fact that rural areas have very little access to internet in general, and the costs of a physical computer are too high.
Plus when you take into account the lack of electricity or even gas for that matter in parts of rural China. There is a real chance that trying to boot up a gaming PC could seriously cause local black/brownouts.

Seriously though this is really messed up. When you aren't loved as a child you grow up to be pretty messed up people.

The entire country runs on ass-backwards moon logic that doesn't make any fucking sense to anybody, least of all the Chinese.

Holy fucking shit China, get your shit together.

@doyama is it true that at one point in china you couldn't have more than 2 kids? There was another part of that but I don't remember it.

The one child per family policy is still in effect. But enforcement is basically non-existant. You have to 'register' any new kids but basically no one does this. They only register the oldest boy child and the rest are unregistered. Thus they have no access to social services like schooling and other things. It's only ever enforced as a hammer against a family that some politician/businessman/etc needs to get rid of or whatever. It's rarely ever enforced as an actual social policy.

Some families resort to dumping girl kids on the street, putting them in orphanages, or outright just killing them though. Mostly that's due to space/money issues rather than actual policy enforcement.

This just gave me an idea. A new scheme to get modern computing into the hands of some of the worlds porest.

Introducing the One Child Per Laptop Scheme

Not a really good idea in China. I guarantee that for every 1,000,000 laptops you send into China, exactly ZERO will end up in a child's hand.

You only have to look into the recent "Red Cross" scandal in China to know that any charitable donations you send to china will not end up in any actual needing person's hand.

http://www.china.org.cn/china/2011-07/15/c...nt_22995200.htm

Note these "Red Cross" organizations are actually for-profit corporations.

I'm never going to send a single penny to any charity in China for this reason. Not because I don't feel for the Chinese people. But because all I'm doing is funding the slush fund of some government officials bank book, or buying a Hermes and Maserati for his mistress.

@doyama, I think you might want to read my post again and maybe edit that one of yours to mention what a bad, tasteless joke it was.

Hah totally missed that one

My rage against the cruelty and ignorance of some people in this world this world just hit another all time high.

I'm not even sure if I can blow my top at this.

How on gods green earth, could you sell your children to fund a gaming addiction. What are people nowadays...this couple aren't even human in my oppinion...they're monsters!

Just...cant even....begin to contemplate it.

Want to feel better here are a few more egregious crimes against nature

* The Chinese are burying the trains in their recent high speed train accident. This is to avoid having to report too many deaths due to the crash which MUST stay below 40, otherwise more people's heads start rolling. BTW, 'injured' people who later die in the hospital DO NOT COUNT to the death toll.

* Blaming the surviving burn victims in a bus fire as the ones who 'brought on flammable materials'

* Claiming a chef 'committed suicide' despite leaving a eloquent suicide note for a person who had no education, and the minor issues of his testicles being crushed and multiple blunt force trauma wounds.

* Giving everyone in Szechuan a big F-U by having a compensation program for the earthquake, but making that program a state secret so no one can actually find out how to get compensation.

Who said they went into a good family? Most kids sold off in other countries wind up as sex slaves/labor slaves. Especially with the high price the other two fetched. Who knows if those kids are even alive now....

On a side note China will do nothing to reclaim the children. NOTHING AT ALL.

Depends on your definition of 'better'

For the male kids there is a 'slightly' higher probability they might improve their lot in life. Since male sons are in hot demand. They most likely ended up in families that could afford the 2-5x markup ($10k-$25k), which in China is a crap ton of money.

For girls it's more 50/50. Western adoption is up so a lot of places are trying to dump off their girls onto the Westerners. But this is a lot harder which is why they don't fetch a good price.

I see the good sides of this agreement. The children will surely benefit here, their parents were most likely neglecting them as it was, seeing that they were spending most of their time playing games anyways.

It's for the best that children are taken away from people who are not capable of raising them, this way or another, t'is all good.

Kinda reminds me of the South Korean story of a couple who let their baby starve through neglect while they spent their lives in an internet cafe playing MMO games (ironically one of which revolved around taking care of a young child supposedly).

Given the children were probably being neglected we can only hope they may have ended up in better hands (i know that might be wishful thinking)
