Okay, okay...I wasn't initially join the conga line of "which politician will drop out in this television series of US election 2024?". I don't know (nor care about) J.D. Vance, and his nomination was pretty overshadowed by Biden's drop from the race. And okay...of course there'd be opponents and critics no matter who Trump would pick. So...it's not like Pence ever did anything but comb his hair during his time as vice president, right(1)?
The thing is: VP's are usually picked as a sort of compliment to bring in a chunk of voters who would otherwise be on the fence. That's why Biden ensured black and women votes with Harris. That's why Obama ensured old white men were represented through Biden, W. Bush had Cheney to run the country and even Trump appealed to evangelical Christians. And that's not even counting the appeal in swing states from the VP's. You can call it how you want, but the VP pick boosts a party popularity.
...until now. J.D. Vance had a net NEGATIVE impact on Trump's party. As someone who personally hates Trump's guts I see this as good news, but it begs the question: why keep him around?
A quick rundown of my clickbait titles:
* aside from him being from battle state Ohio, his pick is a complete mystery strategically. He doesn't bring in black votes (lol @ Tim Scott) or women (lol @ Marjory Taylor-Greene).
* Vance wrote the foreword of a book by the guy who founded project 2025, so pretending the party condemns it becomes even harder
* he once called Trump 'America's Hitler'(2)
* Bolton hates Vance's guts
* he's apparently terrible at speeches
Trump supporters of course have the long term memory of a biscuit, so they could't possibly fathom that anything could actually happen to Donald in the next four years (though things like prison sentence, getting shot(3) and dementia are...well...likely interferences going forward). So I don't think anyone really cares that his VP has the charisma of a jellyfish(4). But I don't think any MAGA is going to bat an eye if they toss him out for someone who scores better in the media.
But enough rambling. What's your opinion on Trump's VP candidate?
(1): yeah, yeah...okay...and "Pence did his constitutional job" on january sixth. but that's not the point here)
(2): in Trump's defence: if he has to pick someone who never criticised him, he'd probably had to pick Melania as VP
(3): the irony here is that he leads the party who opposes gun control in any form whatsoever
(4): I'd say something of his political competence, but credit where due: since nobody's complained yet, that's probably okay.
