As thread title states, I was wondering if or how to get homebrew on a brand new, out of the box N3DS? I've searched the Googles. I've scoured the interwebz. I know I need Gateway to do some of the interesting things I plan, but I'm wondering if there is a method to get homebrew 1.0 or 1.1 without using a browser, YouTube, or Ironfall?

    Thanks.

Edit: Final word for people who discover this thread - I found everything I was looking for from the tutorial thread on Reinand for N3DS by usernametaken. MSET, emuNAND, cia installation, the whole thing. Thanks again for the help.

    Yes.

Your N3DS is exploitable since it's at 9.0. You will need Cubic Ninja to load up one of the CFW, and those will allow you to run unsigned apps, like homebrew and games via cia files.

Not sure if there is a CFW support for the OoT exploit.

Which if you get a gateway, you will still need Cubic Ninja or The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time game to run the exploit (once, then you can install the MSET launcher and not need the game again).

I believe if you buy a Sky3DS, you can then use it to be Cubic Ninja or OoT to load the CFW's.

My friend has a Sky3DS and my 3DS is on the latest firmware, is it possible for me to do anything with his cart as a one time thing or should I stick with Ironhax since I have Ironfall installed?

Right. I have Sky3DS and a legit copy (cartridge) of OoT. But from my understanding, Cubic Ninja required a browser? Or is this bad info? Finally, if this isn't the case, can you point me in the direction of the starter rar/zip for 1.1 and the QR?

Edit: For the other guy - stick with Ironhax. Cubic Ninja requires a boot every time to run Ninjhax. If you don't have the cartridge or Sky3DS, you won't be able to boot.

Edit 2: I'm a complete n00b when it comes to 3DS homebrew/CFW. Can you point me to a thread with info on how to load MSET with Cubic Ninja or a comparable exploit that doesn't require Gateway or browser access but could use Sky3DS instead to run CIA files?

Cubic Ninja doesn't require the browser and I don't run CFW's or Sky 3DS, so I don't know what thread has the info you want. But I do know this is the right section.

Cubic Ninja for Ninjhax requires the browser. I don't know if using it for Gateway requires the browser. At any rate, all N3DS come with a browser, so this isn't a problem.

You can borrow the Sky3DS, load Cubic Ninja on it, and start up your Gateway using CN once so that you can install bluecardfix and mset. Once those are installed, you can give the Sky3DS back.

Note that Gateway's instructions on this are horrible. You should remember that
-- bluecardfix and mset must be installed in SysNAND
-- The NVRAM menu option is not needed, because it is an alternative to using the blue card.

Thanks nyder. You answered most everything. What CFW's work? I see Pasta. But I'd like to load rxtools and MSET. Possible or nah?

Edit: I'm not being clear about my intentions - I'd like to install emunand for updates, and dump sysnand for protection. This is for my wife, so I want it as idiot-proof as possible. I want to backup the cartridges I own so she doesn't have to carry around an extra case. Finally, the only device I have is a blue-button Sky3DS for info.

Edit 2: From what I understand, there's no permanent CFW to run cia without having to reinstall it every time, unless I use Gateway.

Edit 3: I'll figure it out. This ish is pretty complicated, but I think I'm going to attempt to utilize rxTools nightly courtesy of PastaTeam.

No emuNAND will do the latest firmware on the N3DS. We are stuck with 9.5 or less firmware in EmuNAND. Gateway put some new encryption for N3DS owners in 9.6, so until someone figures out the keys, we can't do the latest firmware.

And I wasn't away that CN needed the browser.

    Gateway didn't, Nintendo did.

Yes, if you just want to run homebrew, but I'm pretty sure you can just convert 3dsx files to a cia to run it normally. If you mean to use Ninjhax to enter rxMode or Gateway mode then no, because you need patched signatures to run the Cubic Ninja cia, and you have to be in rxMode or Gateway mode already to be able to do this.

Well, I almost have everything set up via CakesFW, but now I'm stuck on this MSET concept and what it's capable of. I have an emunand set on the same firmware version (9.0) and I have homebrew with FBI as well as Pasta (the way I installed FBI). What can I do with MSET (from what I gather I should be able to get a more permanent homebrew) and is there a guide that makes sense as far as downgrading MSET and the benefits therein?

Edit: I'm seeking a way to run homebrew without a cartridge. I'd like it to be simple. Also, I'd like to update my emuNAND safely to 9.5 so my wife can play her SSB4 (actual cartridge). From my understanding, MSET is what I need to run homebrew without a cartridge. Am I right or wrong?

Edit 2: So quantum, what you're saying is I can't use a permanent Pasta or equivalent to run a CIA that runs homebrew without a cartridge? I know, I know. I'm full of questions, but I want to hash this out to have the most full experience I can possibly get through the N3DS on 9.0.0.20U.

MSET means you can enter signature patched mode using the DS profile exploit. You can do this without a cartridge with a 4.x 3DS using spider (not 100% sure as I have only read about it never done it). For higher firmwares you'll need a DS flashcart to install the ROP (then you won't need it again until you play a DS flashcart).

AFAIK the only way to play homebrew without a flashcart is with Ironhax or Tubehax (on a 9.9 3DS), although I know little to nothing about either apart from their existence. All others require Cubic Ninja.

I have a DSTwo, so I can install the ROP. I got that part, but I don't fully understand the benefit. What will I be able to do practically? Signature Patch mode is blocked on CakeFW, so do I need MSET? Since I lack a 4.x 3DS, using a ROP is my only choice. I have an Old 3DS XL that has Ironhax, Tubehax, and Ninjhax 2.1. I'm not really impressed with that. It's on 9.9.0.26U.

The mset.cia is an older system settings app. This lets you use the system settings exploit to start the Gateway or the CFW. The main benefit is that you don't need Cubic Ninja. You only need the blue card (in addition to the Gateway or CFW), and not even that if you don't play a DS game.

Running a CFW would let you play pirated 3DS games and do basically anything.

I don't know which CFWs, if any, actually support N3DS mset.

This! This is what I want. I'd like to leave my cartridge at home instead of taking it everywhere with me. Is there a good guide to MSET on GBATemp? I haven't found one yet. Just more questions like mine. I'd like to do whatever it takes to get homebrew running on Ninjhax 1.1 without Cubic Ninja. Thanks to all you guys for being ridiculously awesome and answering my asinine questions.

Edit: All I'm missing is a Gateway card. I may purchase one, but I'd like to use the free CFWs instead before I spend 60 dollars more. I already bought Sky3DS for 80. I'd like to not spend much more money getting my 3DS looking somewhat similar to my Wii as far as homebrew capabilities.

Edit 2: I'm running CakeFW right now, but it mentions downgrading my MSET for N3DS. I'm not so much interested in piracy as I am in having my 3DS be completely mine and all that entails.

Lol sorry I thought you already knew what signature patched mode meant. It means you can run unsigned CIAs (and .3ds roms off a Gateway card if you have one).

There is a HUGE difference between running homebrew and running roms.

Homebrew are apps and programs made by hobbyist programmers that only need user land access (Ninjhax 2.0 or Ironhax or Tubehax). Roms require ARM9 access which can only be achieved with CFWs or Gateway on a <= 9.2 firmware (which allow you to enter signature patched mode - called gateway mode, rxMode, or rei mode depending on your CFW of choice)

I want to rip and then run the games my wife already has. I'm a little bored with homebrew, and it doesn't give me that ability anyway. I have ARM9 access with CakeFW. I'd like to just run CIAs so my wife can play all her games straight off her homescreen.

You can either install the limited list of legit CIAs or teach her how to boot into signature patched mode.

I'm being lazy right now, but I've been tussling with this thing since this morning. I can show her how to boot into signature patch mode. Even PastaCFW allows me to do that. What I'd like is to have homebrew on the actual N3DS so she can boot into it without needing a cartridge and then boot into patched mode to play her games. Thanks again quantum - you're mad patient.

If you could, just point me to a guide. I'll figure it out from there.
