In this video, Censored Gaming has mentioned GBATEMP for restoring the censored content of the female character models that usually have them wearing more modest clothing during international release of games, being restored by some "Fans"

In this video, they mention the process of a few game modifications made from the ever popular Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE Uncensor patch, to pokemon X/Y Busty Female pokemon trainer mods.

Great job on the temp getting more coverage. Hope it leads to more people wanting to try out homebrew on 3DS even if its only for game modding.

Hopefully when DQ8 comes out on the 3DS in the States there will be an uncensor patch along with the Orchestrated OST restoration.
Yes, DQ8's OST is Orchestrated in the 3DS version as well, but this is removed in international versions.

Would it be a bad idea to release uncensor patches like as free dlc? Cause i mean dlc isn't rated right so, it has no reason not to. The censorship is for aiming the games at lower rating so more people can buy it, but DLC aren't part of a rating system at least i don't think it is. So it least would be nice if that could be a thing, kinda like vanguard princess uncensor DLC on steam.

I mean of all the things they do release as dlc, Japanese voice options languages, Alternate system voice settings, additional music... colors, costumes, why not just have uncensor patches as dlc. Least it just means that you need access to whatever service you get the game for, which requires a 18+ age anyway. It techincally won't make the game rated any higher cause is not normally like that sold, but additional stuff. I dunno, something really should be considered about this.:ninja:

NOTE: If anyone reading this who is a mod, please change the title? I am not the best at those letter number things and i think i made the number 7 instead of 8 which i think is supposed to be "VIII" instead of what i originally put there. :(

    Missing the point
Censorship is mostly decided by the publisher which in this case is Square Enix. Whether something is free or not they are concerned about how games are rated so it can attract as many consumers as possible if the rating is low enough.

I understand the reason for the decisions made regarding censorship and goals to aim for lower ratings, but my thought was just to release uncensor patches as part of DLC for people who are of a more favorable position to have access to these things, the game can still get the desired rating cause is not part of the game naturally and i don't think DLC is rated by whatever the people responsible for it are in each country (Here is ESRB) But that all i was saying.

Of course some people remember back in the day where they used to have parental codes in games or whatever you wanna call it. Genesis mortal kombat had the blood code, Kasumi ninja, wu-tang clan shaolin style, whatever. Is just a idea anyway. Not that it would actually happen.

I wouldn't be in favor of uncensor DLC, they'd just end up abusing it to make more money.

Wrong actually. If the DLC in question meets and exceeds the age rating of the product in question then it needs to be submitted for it's own ESRB rating. If it's an update then they need to append the rating of the game itself.

I understand that concern but not all dlc is paid, some are free and not even necessary, like i said before about having other region voice language options, or something simular that just adds additional options to the game, is never cost money, is just silly to think of how some features we have apperently goes unused or jusy is more for gaining money instead of enhancing experience or whatever reasons... Is not important to discuss here but if free dlc for uncensor patches was a thing, it would be nice to consider. That was just my opinion.

Thanks for explaining that. I didn't know that was the case and it had me curious for a long time. :)

Though it actually isn't a big deal to some people, the people who do care seem to do stuff about it like modding games, which i dunno if they should cause they can or cause publishers kinda have made deicisions to try and aim for a comfortable rating. The thing about this game is the rating is the same as the original PS2 but since is on 3DS is nintendo and just seem like the reason why this could be part of it as nintendo usually have stricter censorship rules than sony or maybe microsoft. Whatever it is just kinda confusing.

I think the issue with the rating being the same as the PS2 version and still getting the censorship, is that ratings have become more strict in Japan since the release of the original PS2 game. I don't believe it had anything to do with Nintendo. (this time)

But why would the rating in japan have to do with international places like USA? If the decision was made by square enix themself for reasons such as stricter censorship in japan, why would that effect the rest of the world? The reason to censor stuff internationally is usually made by the localization team or the publisher of that region decision to do so, if i am mistaken then i guess the plot thickens as the mess gets sorted out.

In this case the censors where done in the Japanese version right from the start (in other words, an uncensored version doesn't exist), and I assume no one saw any reason to change anything for other regions. Personally, I'm fine with the changes. I'd rather have it unaltered from the original, but I think some people make too big a deal of it. I don't play Dragon Quest games to ogle at make believe girls.

In the end most of the "Censorship" I spot nowadays is to meet sales goals. I don't like it either but I don't blame the company when they say they want to make a game rated T for teen so they can get a bigger demographic while the project is in it's infancy and they have to cut fluff at the end to meet that rating. It happened with SFV. The ESRB(and japans CERO most likely) gives developers "guidance" on what should be altered or what targets should be met for certain ratings(they can't tell you what rating you'll get but they can help you get where you want to basically). That said whats also troubling is the recent nastiness in the community towards people doing "restoration patches"(good on the guy who edited the DQVIII models I like the term) and anti censorship patches like with Tokyo Mirage Sessions. More and more these days you see people belittling players for wanting the same experience as those playing the Japanese version or those who like modifying their game to get a bit closer to what the devs vision for it intended. That to me is even more troubling. I think that we're eventually gonna reach a point where more people try learning some moonrunes because the number of censored games is increasing while the time and effort it takes to translate and hack into a game for the necessary edits is just as substantial as before.

tl;dr It gets harder from here on out.

I'll stop rambling now because there is not much more to say.

Well i agree, at the end of the day, the more people playing the game, the better. It just means is a good thing that more people want it. As long as the decisions of censorship doesn't alter how the game is played much like the fire emblem fates "Petting" removal or something similar. Is fine by me. The part i don't like is making Gameplay changes, asthetic changes are never my problem, as they offer nothing serious to the game itself aside from a slight deep impact on each countries culture difference or how one sees something i guess. But is always nice to have the option, and least is explained the reasons why changes were made, understandable.

I'm not sure how much do ratings effect sales for games but i would think it does a significant ammount. Then there is games like Dead or alive 5 which is 4 years old and rated mature, only for the dozens of costumes for the female characters (Seriously like one of each has over 60 to choose from) where is not such a bad fighting game (In my opinion a clone of virtual fighter or tekken) But doesn't seem to do bad at all compared to games like street fighter V or other similar aspects. Unless fighting games have huge ammounts of blood or something like mortal kombat, the rating should just stay TEEN in my opinion cause is just on the border of "COSTUME SHOW TOO MUCH SKIN = CHANGE RATING TO MATURE" (of course is just exaggerating that part)

While on the subject of things, Lockstin over on youtube just uploaded top 10 fire emblem controversies. Oddly enough a few mention censorship behind some features (SKINSHIP in fire emblem Fates/IF) and characters sexual preference.
