Indie platformer Cave Story has sauntered on Steam, boasting a sheen of upgraded graphical loveliness and a remastered soundtrack. It also comes with a few bonus modes.

Cave Story comes from developer Daisuke Amaya, and was originally made available for free. The free version is still out there if you want to give it a whirl before a full purchase (don’t forget to install the English translation patch before playing). Cave Story+ is available with a 15% discount this week on Steam, which means you can grab it now for £5.94 / $8.49.

Good idea, didn't think about downloading it to play on my laptop yet.
I don't see the advantage of getting this updated version just yet, though.

I'm buying the 3ds version. It has been rebuild completely and I think there is enough content.
I do wonder what the bonus modes are.

If it's the same as the Wii version, it's 100% worth it for that price.

Yes, but if the only differences are graphics, sounds and some small bonuses, I'd rather wait after I'm done with the original on PC before spending money on this one.
(The DSi/3DS version would be an instant buy, though.)

Just thought about this: The person who made this game... He probably didn't even think about the possibility of Nintendo buying rights to his works.
What would your reaction be if you made a PC homebrew and it made it to the 3DS?

Huh? Nintendo doesn't have rights to Pixels work.

They certainly had the rights to remaking the entire game in 3D (both for the 3D effect AND the 3D models for everything) for the 3DS, though.

Can anybody confirm which edition this is a port of? The EU release has a bunch of fixed shit the US version skipped over in their haste, if it's a port of the first US version I might not bother.

I suppose the easiest way to tell would be Jack's portrait (EU has whiskers, US lacks them), as he shows up early in the game.

Judging by Balrog's mouth (look at that article, US version has a black square in the corner of his mouth, PAL has a diagonal line) it's the PAL version.

If the game is available for free, why spend money on it?

    1. It has better graphics, audio etc.
    2. To support the developer
    3. Extra gameplay modes.

But yeah, I wouldn't really consider paying for this game, considering it is available free.

    1. I found that the pixels really worked well. Nothing was a mystery.
    2. If the developer really wanted my support, they'd do something that didn't make me look like a moron.
    3. ... It's a platformer.
