Well, only if there's an universal medium. The cartridges ARE more durable, however, at this point I can't really see them replacing the optical discs anytime soon (yet, I think optical mediums are a thing of the past).

    Cartridges will not be used.

Online downloads is the future of content distribution.

    Let's just say, Flash Memorys.

How about adding a Poll ? Maybe something like:

Do you think Flash based Mediums will be on par or superior to Disk based ones by 2009 ?
    Yes
    No

The author of the blog article should really do some research instead of multiplying a number by two. Though it's an interesting prediction.

That will not happen anytime soon. Atleast when most of the people still have slow internets or not internet at all/doesn't know how to buy movies and games online.

It will happen before flash media overtakes optical media.

Flash media is the future. By 2009 though? I highly doubt it. The size of SD cards already dwarf Blu-Ray. It's just a matter of time until the price falls, and flash media prices have been plummeting. $80 3 years ago bought me a 1 gig thumb drive. Now it buys me a 16 gig one.

I was amazed to see ALDI selling 2GB Micro SD cards for £9.99 yesterday (posted a flyer through my door) so I'm going there Tuesday to buy 2, maybe more.
The brand was TEVLON which I know isn't the best, but they have a 3 year guarantee, so that'll do me just fine for transferring files between work and home. ATM I use a 4GB Pro Duo but I lent it my mate to use in his PSP.
Note: Never lend anyone your media cards.

Heard of Steam? Games are distributed by online downloads. And yes, it is happening. Now.

Behind you! I know you looked!
Cartridges are a lot better idea, they're starting to get a lot cheaper for the memory than discs. Optical storage won't be dead anytime soon, but expect flash memory to become more prominent and used every year.

Honestly, I prefer having my games in a physical medium.
So, online content isn't good for me.

I like seeing stacks of games on my counter.

QFT! Internet connection is getting cheaper and faster each year.. online distribution is definetly the future, the success of iTunes Store, Youtube, Steam and Xbox Live show us that.

The topic title statement makes sense if you change "Cartridges" for "flash memory".. it's already happening with music, been some time since I've saw a CD player.. and been some time since I used a optical media to exchange files with someone, almost everyone I know has a pendrive or SD card for that.

In 1996 it was more expensive.. but the price gap is getting smaller, flash memory will eventually get cheaper than optical media.. probably not in 2009 though..

Anyway, I see the next generation of consoles getting games by online distribution mainly..

edit: Sorry for the double post.. what happened to the double post merger? :/

I agree, flash memory will overtake optical media soon.

i don't foresee internet streaming becoming standard anytime soon.

why don't you take a look at the size of some flashm memory, ie. microSD cards. How hard can they be to store?
