Here's hoping that the game does well on the consoles. To people who were burned by RE5 and 6, this game will definitely be a revelation.

Why reboot it? I don't understand why developers feel the need to reboot a series because it's lost its way. Tons of great series pulled out of terrible slumps without rebooting. Take a look at Sonic Colors and Generations, for proof. Just make a new, GOOD game in the series to revive it: It doesn't need to be rebooted and lose all the story thus far.

Or Resident Evil with Resident Evil 4.

To be fair, I think there's a fine case for rebooting here. With Wesker and Umbrella long gone, the series is just sputtering around at this point without any clear direction in sight. They've failed to create any new, worthwhile villains, and their efforts to raise the stakes fell flat completely. I know losing all the plot up to now can be frustrating, but to be honest, there's really nothing left to lose.

A back to basics approach, on the other hand, could do wonders. Give the franchise to someone new and let them take a whack at it; at the very least, it can't be any worse than 6... as long as they don't follow DmC's lead, that is.

But like you said, they could try something new. Rebooting just to bring umbrella back would be kind of silly, in my opinion. Make something new... that's actually good, without rebooting. That's just my opinion, anyway.

Personally, I've always been kinda biased against reboots (except in extreme cases), because I think it's a real shame to essentially throw out what characters and story progression have been made thus far.

The story is the last thing I care about in a Resident Evil games as it's always really crappy. Even Revelations which had the sanest story out of all the games still had a ridiculous plot. While I would like iconic characters in the series to remain, I couldn't care less if the story changed.

Well yeah, but again, you can completely change the story without rebooting.

I would not be surprised if Capcom rebooted Resident Evil as a dance game.

I wonder how much was the expected sales for the 3DS RE:R. It'll be interesting to see what the reboot will mean in the end and will it hold out :P

I've played quite a few RE games, but never actually got into the story other than the general knowledge when I played with a friend ages ago (90s? Gee I'm starting to be old :glare:)

They need to bring back Resident Evil from the days of old with clunky controls. But clunky controls on purpose as opposed to not knowing any better with early incarnations. Less emphasis on action and more on puzzles and when action is required, make it of the "every shot counts" variety.

I didn't mind Resident Evil 5, never played R6 apart from the god awful demo but the series has took a nosedive since 4.

I still rate both the remakes on the gamecube as the series highlights

    Idea for Capcom:
Give the series a rest for a while and stop whoring out many games.

The problem is, an established story (especially one as needlessly convoluted as Resident Evil's) can hold developers back. Existing continuity can bind a developer's hand and limit what they can do with certain characters, locations, etc. Wiping the slate clean gives the creative team actual freedom to do new things.

A needless reboot can be annoying, sure, but I think Resident Evil has worn out its welcome. If we have to get more, and knowing Capcom, we do, a reboot means we can at least try something new.

I think looking at the 3DS Revelations as being successful is a bad move. It's contextual: it was a good title for the system at its time, where competition was pretty mellow and, honestly, non-competitive. The game can sell well while still being an average experience, so long as it sails higher--for whatever reason--than the other titles at its release.

Why would they feel the need to reboot this? Do they want another DmC situation on their hands?

I was thinking of the same thing... Revelations was released at a time when there weren't really many great titles for the 3DS (and two of those, Star Fox and Zelda 3D, were remakes of N64 games), and the ones that were had come out a few months prior (Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7).

Most people who know me, Know I am an AVID fan of the Res Evil series. So my two cents:

I welcome a Reboot to the series. But only if they bring back the horror aspect much stronger. Capcom needs to learn that things popping out of nowhere ALL THE TIME isnt what makes a horror game ...horrific.

Do I think we need to get rid of the action aspect? Not at all. I think it needs to be balanced with the horror.

Remember those old days, where you had about 6 bullets in one measly little pistol, and there were small groups coming toward you? Not even Hordes, just small groups, that you didnt know if you'd be able to fend off with what little ammo you had?

You know what kind of bugs me the most? Is all this open world stuff that was around in res 5 and 6.
I mean, the game is called RESIDENT Evil. As in, trapped in a Residence with small hope of escaping without fear of being trapped in a corner and being eaten alive?
Revelations did a good job bringing that back a bit.
But Res 5 and 6 didnt bring that feeling of danger like the older ones did.

How is Devil May Cry being brutally murdered? Oh god you're one of those morons aren't you?

Here's the thing, the reboot is going to be weird if they do decide to do it. RE4 fantastic. RE5, great. RE6 shit. But that's because RE6 tried doing waaay too much and it didn't have a clear goal as to what the fuck the game should be.

If they do a reboot, it's going to be weird because DMC was rebooted (though I have no idea why), and it kinda goes against all the story in the DMC universe.
