I should begin by saying I have been completely ignorant of the 3DS hacking scene until now and I’ve been reading/watching so much that it’s making my head spin. I finally decided to take the plunge. My experiment is with an Old 3DS that was running 10.5 and I am using ninjhax as my entry point.

I began by following this guide, starting from Part 1 moving forward:
https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki
I made it all the way to Part 3, Step 20. When I went to load EmuNAND, it would only load me back into SysNAND. I kept playing around with it, but never could get it to load EmuNAND; just reload SysNAND. If I tried to load CakesCFW via Homebrew Launcher I would just get a black screen.

I gave up on that guide and gave this one a try (NOTE: I formatted the SD card before beginning):

I followed this one exactly as shown. Same issue as the previous guide, when I hit the 17:00 mark, where I should be booting into rxTools EmuNAND, I get a black screen. I thought for sure it had something to do with menuhax, so I even tried doing it without it and the same problem.

So now I moved onto a third guide (NOTE: I formatted the SD card before beginning):
https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutoria...luding-emunand-coldboot-cia-installer.405589/
Again, I was very careful to follow the steps. I made it as far as (Setting up EmuNAND section) trying to load PastaCFW from the Homebrew Launcher, but again I got a black screen.

So clearly this little O3DS does not want to play with any CFW. There is a very high likely hood I am doing something wrong, but encountering similar problems while following all three guides makes me believe it’s something else.

Here is my question, while my 3DS shows 9.2.0-20, is it possible that the downgrade (from 10.5 to 9.2 following the github.com guide) didn’t go correctly and is causing this? Any recommendations on how to go about troubleshooting this?

Regards,

GC

Did any errors occur during the downgrade?

Run this: https://github.com/svanheulen/downgrade_check

Nope, the downgrade process went smooth.

Funny, I JUST downloaded that and was about to check :) Here is what it shows:

Checking installed titles...

Extra title
Title ID 0x0004013000004002

Complete.
Checking missing titles...
Complete.

So is that correct?

Those Title IDs look correct. Your downgrade was successful.

Are you sure you have all the proper files on your SD card?

Stupid question but...you do have an emunand set up right? Or cfw's will never run

Totally legit question. For the first two guides, yes, I made it past the point of creating the EmuNAND. The third guide has you loading PastaCFW prior to setting up an EmuNAND.

Are you sure you have all the proper files on your SD card?

Also a legit question. I've checked and re-checked the files, so I sure hope so

I'm going to do a system format on the 3DS and try the third guide again. Thankfully there is nothing I need to backup/worry about with this O3DS; it's my tester before moving onto my N3DS.

So I am happy to report that with MANY hours of time invested my O3DS is fully working with EmuNAND. I went with wurstpistole’s guide (again) and I went VERY slowly, reading and rereading the instructions and checking my work. I also formatted my SysNAND before I began, so I don’t know if that helped my previous problem or it was just a fluke.

One thing I didn’t realize when I was following the first guide is that Cakes does not patch the version number; so it’s very possible that it DID boot me into the EmuNAND on my first attempt. However, it did not anytime thereafter (I was just getting black screen).

Following the second guide it definitely did not boot me into rxTools (only a black screen).

Now having done this process so many times (in a few different ways) and being much more methodical about the process I am much more comfortable and will feel more confident when I attempt it again.

Thank you all for your help; your questions helped me think differently about the problem and eventually solve it.

Regards,

GC
