Can't leave sleepmode/sleepmode turns off instantly

I have the Ez-Flash ODE and a copy of A Link to the Past and Four Swords. The EZ-Flash won't wake from sleepmode even when I do the correct combination, and the Link to the Past and Four Swords cartridge sleeps then instantly turns back on. I have the Hispeedido drop-in screen and the funnyplaying battery if that helps at all.

What sleep mode are you trying to use? The one provided by the game itself or the one provided by the flashcart?

The ingame sleep mode is generally never supported by SD based flash carts, due to how the hardware has to handle games.
As such you have to use the sleep mode from the ODE itself, which has to be turned on first in the menu, then you have to start the game with "Boot with addon", and then it can be activated at any time via the button combo from the same menu.

I've been using the one from the flashcart, which is the one that won't wake after I press start + select.

Start + Select wakes up the system, you have to set the combo to activate sleep to something else that doesn't use start and select at the same time.

I've had my sleep combo as L + Select + R. The issue is that the start + select doesn’t wake it up when pressed.

did you get it to work? I have the same issue and that I cannot wake it from sleep.
I also have the highspeedido drop in (V5) and a battery mod..
I fear the mods don't work well together with the ez-flash. Will try to get my hands on an unmodified gba
