OTTAWA-Jack Layton, the New Democratic Party leader who led his party to Official Opposition status in this year’s federal election, has died after a battle with cancer. He was 61.

"Your support and well wishes are so appreciated. Thank you," Layton, posted to the social media site Twitter in July after announcing he was battling a new form of cancer. "I will fight this and beat it."

It ended up being the last public announcement he would make in his long political career, which saw him evolve from campus activist to rabble-rousing left-wing municipal councilor to the most electorally successful leader of the federal New Democrats in history.

Layton had been on a leave of absence as party leader since July 25, when he temporarily stepped aside to fight a second ( and evidently much more serious ) bout of cancer.

It is cliché to say that a politician has politics in his blood, and yet there are few politicians who embody it the way Layton did, with his family involvement in the life reaching all the way back to the birth of the country.

I find it mildly amusing your username is "terminal_illness" and you're posting a news article about a guy who died of cancer.

It's always good to see a politician with the balls to back up his words. Wish we could get a little of that here in the U.S. Sad to see him go.

also sad that actual news doesn't get much response around here...

That's really too bad... Looks like he liked to socialize and have fun judging by that photo you got there.

How much would you care if Mark Rutten passed away? Exactly. Not everyone is from the state side you know.

To be honest, I couldn't care at all, it holds no newsvalue to me whatsoever. What you believe is news, doesn't have to be for another. It's relative.

I shed manly tears as I read the letter he wrote.

    You will be missed, Layton.

Aaaaaand I'm still going to vote Conservative.

Sad that he died of cancer though. Never liked him, but nobody should die from cancer.

Nor was the man whom the article is about...

I would care equally as much were someone to post an article stating that Mark Rutten, Francois Fillon, or Petr Necas passed away... Doesn't impact my life but compared to "rumored MW3 pointstreaks" or "Disney Universe" this feels more like something that actually affects some lives somewhere...

No need to get butthurt/rage guy...

    I'm not your guy, friend!

And last time I checked, it was. Not sure what you think which country lies above you.

    And it's still relative.

    guy noun
    1. Informal . a man or boy; fellow: He's a nice guy.

In no way did I use it possessively...

Sorry, usually when people refer to "state side" they are refering to The United States of America. I wasn't aware that: state side=North America.

yes, it's relative. So why are you posting in a thread you care nothing about to begin with?

I believe he's referencing a line from South Park with that "not your guy, friend" thing. Something about Canadians.

As for why he's even posting in this thread that means nothing to him: I really have no idea, and I'd hope it stops.
