So currently I am wanting to try the n3ds but i have everything on my original n3dsxl and i was thinking if i put cfw on the n3ds, could i make an emunand of my existing n3dsxl and run that on the n3ds using cfw?

Am I understanding this correctly? You want to create an EmuNAND for either the n3DS or n3DSXL so that both of them share and use the same Nintendo 3DS folder or library of 3DS games, DLC, and updates?
While possible, it's terrible for various reasons.
You can't. I mean, you can share data not encrypted by the system like 3dsx homebrew, but stuff like installed titles, themes, saves, etc. can't be shared.
I suggest you keep the two systems with separate title collections. If you go ahead with that guide, whichever 3DS that ends up borrowing the other's NAND image can get them both banned if that one goes online.

Your n3DS and n3DSXL can use the same micro SD card, but they shouldn't share the exact installed game copies. As long as they have separate Nintendo 3DS/<ID0>/... folders, where <ID0> is a 32-char named folder tied to each system's movable.sed (encryption identity), you can install the same set of games provided your SD card has enough space to hold twice the data.
You can also reuse copies of HOME Menu games, DLCs, and updates as CIA files:

I was thinking of just trying to see what I prefer so ill check out a certain amount of games with the n3ds by transferring saves from my personal n3dsxl
