This is probably going to sound like a real stupid question but are you the descendants of immigrants and can you speak their language. My Dad's Welsh but I was brought up in Canada. At no time did I hear my Dad speaking it and I was never taught it. Are your parents or grandparents from a different country with a different first language to the one you were born/raised in and can you speak their first language?

It's just always something that's interested me.

My mom was born in Hong Kong and she speaks Cantonese well and Mandarin ok, I know neither. My dad wasn't an immigrant though, although his grandparents were born in Italy, I don't speak that either. English only for me.

Well, they only speak English, so I would hope so.
It would certainly be more interesting if they knew another language.
    So I could know it.
I would like to know German.

So you're not actually German? Are your folks German?

I can understand and speak my native language (somali) quite well. I can even read it too.
The problem is, there are too many dialects in such a small country so people don't understand me anyway :/

Sweet. Were you taught it or did you pick it up from your folks?

My dad attempted to teach me but he gave up because I proved to be too stubborn of a student [IMG]
I kind of picked it up as they were talking and occasionally asked the meaning of a word I didn't understand.
They always speak to me in somali and I reply back in my own mix of english and somali.

Since I was born in the UK, I can't speak it perfectly and there are two main dialects under Bangla/Bengali I speak to my parents in one and they've tried teaching me the other by sending me to classes although I can read the other dialect I can't understand a word, I just sit there flabbergasted when someone tries to talk to me. Also the type of Bangla I speak, I'v enever been taught how to write using it; the characters are the same but I just fon't know which letters to use because they have multiples.

I can speak Uzbek and write it in Cyrillic (Russian) writing system, Latin Alphabet, and a little Perso-Arabic Alphabet. My language is about 60% Turkish and the rest is Farsi. We also have alot of Russian words for any contemporary words like electronics.
I am also interested in learning Farsi, Russian, Turkish, and maybe Arabic.
