I'd like a little more info on whether or not it's possible to use wad install files to run VC and Wiiware that's backed up

first you must install the .wad channel with waninkoko wad manager 1.3, and after with native Wii data management, you can move all installed channel in your SD card.
Now you can start all your favorite channel from SD channel (including homemade channel).

The only way to use wads from SD menu on 4.0:

Install wads with WAD Manager 1.3. Copy to SD with Data Management. Have IOSes with signing bug not fixed (cIOSCORP). Then it should work.

    Possibly a n00b question.
Is it possible just to copy the "private" folder from the SD card to another SD card to run backed up VC and Wiiware?

And if so could you do that with homebrew channel?

No you can't. Tickets must be in the Wii in order to play.
