I bought the gateway today so it should be at my home on Tuesday, but I was wondering if you need the "red" card for the installation of .cia's (mainly theme .cia's) to work?

Can you boot into classic mode without the red card? It says it can but it didn't work for me!

Nope, just install Dev Menu/BigBlueMenu with the redcard on the Sysmenu OR in emunand, with the Dev Menu in .3ds version, then you can boot the app without redcard in Sysnand or Emunand.
