Hacking Can you backup up bootleg GBA games.

Ordered a Pokemon Leaf Green game from Gamestop, and I wanna know if it's possible to back up save data for PKHeX, in case it's a bootleg. Bootleg games won't allow you to migrate Pokemon to the DS games.

Sometimes bootlegs will incorporate the save into the .gba. So, in order to get the .sav, you would need to dump the rom and boot it up with an emulator and then save to create the .sav.

Yes. You can also return it if it's bootleg.

Pretty much given up on returning something if its fake or not. If its real, I hit Jackpot, and the backup is not necessary. If its fake, I can alway backup the save, and edit it with PKHex.

They're a fairly recent phenomenon. They use flash instead of SRAM, a small portion of the flash memory is dedicated to the save file and most save/rom dumpers can't see this configuration properly.

I've never even been successful restoring the save to the same cart it was backed up from always corrupts no matter what method used.

IIRC someone posted here semi-recently about a GBA Minish Cap bootleg that had the save embedded in the ROM, though that one wouldn't save. It came with a save already on it and any time you rebooted it was reset back to the original condition. Reminded me a bit of some creepypasta BEN
Anyway, from dumping the ROM he found out that the save was actually embedded in the ROM. Guess they forgot to use a rewritable flash chip or something?

That's probably because it's using a different save type, it should be possible to convert the save though. If a tool doesn't exist for it, load the bootleg ROM in an emulator, make a save state, load the save state in the unmodded ROM then save. Should work if they didn't make so many changes to the ROM that the save state is incompatible.

Dumping the ROM won't normally dump the save unless the save is actually embedded in the ROM (which I believe is still rare)

I ran into this problem with bootleg carts. I found a clunky solution. First you have to backup the whole game rom as the save is embedded in it. I then ran 2 instances of VBA with VBA link. Load the bootleg ROM into one and any Gen 3 rom in the other. Both games will need to be saved at a point where you can trade Pokemon. It seems like every save function, either manual or automatic, embeds the save file into the ROM EXCEPT the auto save immediately after transferring a Pokémon. Once you've done this you should find a useable .SAV file in the same folder as your bootleg ROM. I've still no idea how to re-embed a save file into the bootleg rom.

You need to use an hex editor to paste the save into the rom file but it should be at the right spot.

What you can do is to add a battery in the botleg cartridge, they should be tabs for it.
