I know... i was expecting the 3ds to handle 240p

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

if that amnesiac player thingy can do audio, it might be perfect for me.

Bluecone can do soundcloud?!! That's new!

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I am focused on file size more than video quality, but i still want the video quality to be decent(enough on the 3ds, considering its limitations)
That's why i am asking about h.265 because it HALVES the file size

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I dont know how much power it will take to decode it though

Regarding H.265: It is claimed that the codec offers better compression than H.264, but, using current available CPUs, the conversion time of H.265 is much longer. I think, the only way a codec like H.265 can be encoded with reasonable efficiency, is with GPU-accelerated video encoding. Which, as far as I currently know, is not available through free encoder options.

Actually, try handbrake. It is free and it does h.265.

Also, does MarcusD have soundcloud implemented on the 3DS? It was on his bluecone to-do list, but it hasn't been updated in a while.

I dont care about encoding time, i just want video with the reasonable video and audio quality and have a decent size. Referring to the amnesiac player before, if it has audio support with MP4s, it might be perfect for me.

libmpeg2 or Xvid might be good candidates but there's a shortage of developers at the moment.
Just gotta wait until one gets bored enough to think "I wonder if..." and tries something crazy.

H.265 requires more power then the 3DS can give it and really requires it to be supported in the cpu/gpu. So you won't get H.265 on the 3DS ever. Just doesn't have the power.

now that you mention that re-encoding is an option, I can make a video player which supports libTheora and libVorbis, and that way you could decode video and audio at an approximate max 34fps on old3DS

How soon can u release it

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

If I have a movie that's 3 hours, will it take that much space on the 3DS SD card?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Will the video have decent video quality if I use these codecs?

I have noticed that all of the Homebrew video players don't have skip bar to go to some point in the movie. Can you implement that, MarcusD? It would be a better homebrew solution for everyone at the moment.

as soon as I write the code for it

it depends on how much moving stuff is on the screen, the less movement the smaller filesize. but please keep your original movie files if you need then somewhere else other than your 3DS because this will encode the video *specifically* for the 3DS, so it'll lose quality

on the 3DS it'll be as quality as possible, but if you play the video file anywhere else then it'll be shit quality

I could try, but even if I succeed then skipping will take a long time due to how underpowered the 3DS is

@Maximumbeans, Indeed. I've been working on getting this Infecutus chip to work on my PS2. But after soldering, I realised that a plastic piece was missing from the power ribbon cable to the power and eject buttons.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Now I could go with soldering the contacts from the cable to the connector on the mobo, but doesn't sound like a good permanent solution.

Man, that's beyond my brain  I'm no good with hardware for now. I'd like to get into hardmods in future though

@Maximumbeans, Maybe start practice soldering. Get a cheap-ass soldering iron and follow some good YouTube tutorials.

Least my experience has gotten better than over a decade ago. My iron would constantly bump into components and break them.

Sounds good. I actually did soldering but like 16 years ago for school so uuuuh probably rusty haha
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Same here. I did soldering at school from a teacher who I honestly liked since he had plenty of good electronics experience.
