Hacking Can someone recommend an external hard drive for my wii.

I want to backup my wii games. I already have the homebrew channel installed. My wii is 4.3u. I read some guides on how to do this but it still looks complicated. Plus what hard drive should I get? How many gigabytes is enough? I have about 40 wii games plus I want to put everything that's on my SD card to the hard drive. Also I'd rather not have to pay an arm and a leg for it. What's a reasonable price?

Ok so I've been searching google. I can't seem to find any that are affordable. Even the 160GB ones are over $65 bucks or no longer available or refurbished. Can someone give me a link? Even this one is $70

Dude, did you see my post? Best Buy is selling the 1TB ones for $79 right now. That is pretty good for a TB.

Not really. Think about it... My entire Wii collection takes a little over 30Gb. If you use WiiMC you can use quite a few GB's with Videos. You could also store a bunch of files from your computer on it that are useful but not needed at the moment. I am very happy with mine and you might be surprised at how small the My Passport is! It is small!

I have the Western Digital 1TB Passport (USB 3.0 flavor) and it's great...for back-ups. I've had less than satisfactory results w/ homebrew and UNEEK (works on an older, smaller, drive but not this one).

It's a bith expensive and I know that USB 3.0 is useless for the Wii but it looks as if it was made for the wii, and if the wii is outdated it's still a cool drive. I bought it some months ago for ~60€ /= ~80$, it works perfect btw. The black one is also availble with USB 2.0 and less expensive. Just keep in mind that the Versions with USB 3.0 have a green light when connected to an USB 2.0 port.

Sorry about the mobile site. I'm posting from my nook color. Anyway they have good prices. Also when I get the hard drive it is possible to format half in WBFS and the other half in FAT32 right? If I'm reading the guides right the wbfs is for the wii games and the fat32 is for the homebrew stuff that's currently on my SD memory card?

Okay and how do I do that exactly?

use your partitioning tool to create one instead two partitions
format it to fat32 the same way you would the second from your idea
copy the loader you want to use there unless you want to start it form sd (no reason imho)
it might need some of its config changed but you are probably good
run it and rip the games (like you would with a wbfs partition)

I bought a Lacie Rikiki 500gb usb2.0 drive, formatted as a single fat32 partition. Works perfect.
Its also very stylish and fits very nice with a black wii. Not to mention its SMALL

Only downside with it is that the bundled usb cable is about 5cm too short to have flat on the table next to the wii, if the Wii is standing.
And of course all my other cables are 50-100cm, which is too long lol

As far as backups go.. I use Wii Backup Manager to transfer my stored backups from the PC to the Wii. .iso files will be converted to .wbfs on the fly, and split if needed.

It is also capable to download covers, if you prefer to download from your PC rather than the Wii (maybe your Wii doesnt have internet connection...)

I use NTFS only for *.wbfs backups and it works fine, too, also I don't have to split any file up. Apps are stored on SD, maybe I'll add a second fat32 partition for nand emulation.

But I wouldn't use Wii Backup Manager to transfer the backups to the Wii beacause there will be unnecessary fragmentation of the files. I've noticed it when using Defraggler.

You could avoid it if you just convert the games with Wii Backup Manager to *.wbfs and copy them manually with copy&paste because windows doesn't fragment the data if it's not necessery.

Just test it, I think you'll get the same results
