Can someone explain the launch options and setting up of emunand? Have I done it correctly do I need to edit an ini file?

My SD card is fat32 with the first partition (SWITCH) big and the second partition 32gb also fat32
I did a "create emuMMC" in hekate this folder appears in my first partition. I setup wifi in CFW to update fw (I know I shouldn't have) and it seemed to copy across wifi settings to all launch options. Thanks :)

I'll attach a screenshot of my SD card layout, I assumed Stock would be copied to the 32Gb partition but shows empty.

CFW (SYSNAND) - this boots shows (AMS in fw version)
CFW (EMUNAND) - boots
Stock (SYSNAND) - boots (just shows fw version)
Stock (EMUNAND) - not booting

Also if I wanted to copy my old *cough files back I assume I need to nspsplit them?

I will tell you basically what I did and apparently, it worked. I've been using emuMMC for two days now.

First of all, you need to create at least one partition on your SD card, having in result, when connected to your PC, in appearance, two disks, for example, Disk G and Disk H (both corresponding with your SD), and one of them, must be at least 31.5Gb if I am not wrong, so to be sure, and what I have, is a 32GB partition.

Then, you place your SD in the Switch, and load Hekate (I use Hekate 5.0.1, so I will explain it how I did it with this payload). Then, when Nyx is loaded, you need to go to the emuMMC option, then under -"emuMMC Tools" option, you create a new emuMMC with the "Create emuMMC" option, and then selecting the SD Partition option. If you have a valid partition (32GB or more), then the setup will display a new message saying that a valid partiton has been found. Then, you select the option which makes the setup use that partition (I don't remember what that option's text is, sorry!), and then, after a while, the emuMMC will be created and you can go to CFW emuMMC and use it.

So, the steps are:
  1. Create a partition on your SD with about 32GB.
  2. Insert your SD in your Switch and run Hekate (in my case, Hekate 5.0.1)
  3. Select emuMMC on the Nyx screen.
  4. Select "Create emuMMC"
  5. Select "SD Partition"
  6. If there is a valid partition (32GB or more) then choose the "ACCEPT" option
  7. Run CFW emuMMC

That's what I did, and at least, seems that works correctly. Maybe I haven't done an extra step or something that was supposed to be needed, but with these steps I have a running emuMMC with three NSP installed as of today.

Hope it helped!

Edit: Sorry, I forgot about something you said. That you thought that the emuMMC would be copied to the 32GB partition.

I assumed that too, because that's how emuNand worked for 3ds, but in this case it seems it's not like that, I also have an emuMMC folder on my not 32GB partition, but I am not sure how it works, because all that I install,I select that goes to the SD instead of the emuMMC "disk", but if I install something to the emuMMC disk instead of the SD (I mean, in the Goldleaf install options), then the emuMMC folder's size gets bigger and bigger. So, I am not sure how exactly it works.

I'm just saying this, so you know I am in the same condition as you are.

Thanks for that great explanation!

I did basically what you did, although step5 above I didn't get to choose a partition it just popped up saying found a valid partition so I clicked install.

My emuMMC folder is also on the first larger partition same as you.
So is the 32gb partition actually being used? possibly it's hidden or soft linked to the emuMMC folder. When you say emuMMC disk I assume you are referring to the second 32gb partition.
Turning my Wi-Fi on while booted into what I want to be my clean ofw appears to replicate when I boot into the cfw so not sure you're to fix that but I thought the system settings could be different depending on what you booted, especially Wi-Fi.
Edit: why can't I boot stock(emunand)
Edit 2: found the answer:
https://github.com/CTCaer/hekate/issues/250), so it's not currently possible to use emummc to get online. (You can boot into sysnand with ofw or cfw, or you can boot into emummc with cfw). Presumably this will be fixed in an update...

Thanks mate.
I probably need to read the hekate documentation to understand the 4 different launch options.

Okay, what I meant with step 5 "Select SD Partition", is that you needed to choose between the options that appeared > "File emuMMC", "SD Partition" and "Cancel" <, the "SD partition" option. If you only have one partition (not including the "base" partition), an option to choose a partition doesn't appear. I am not sure if I'm explaining correctly. If not, I can make you a picture of it.

About the 32GB partition being used or not, what I found when doing tests and things on the emuMMC, is that the 32GB partition it's not used as emuMMC, but as SD space. What I am trying to say, is that if you use Goldleaf, and try to install something, and you choose to install to SD, and then you go to manage data (I think that's how called in english?) in the Settings menu, you will see that actually, the game or program has been installed in the SD part. I can make you a picture too if I am not explaining correctly, sorry! Haha.

I am not sure if I understood what you are saying but this is how (I think) it works:
> If you have no Wifi connections in yout sysnand and then you make an emuMMC based on that sysNand, obviously, the emuMMC will not have any wifi connections configured, but if you then after creating the emuMMC, go back to your OFW, and create a Wifi connection, and then you go back to your emuMMC, the wifi connection that you made in your sysnand, wouldn't be configured in your emuMMC, and vice versa.

I didn't know you couldn't get online with emuMMC. Based on what other people said, you could get online in emuMMC. I didn't read it explicit, it was just implyied in the context I was reading. Sorry for not being able to be of much more help! :/

And now, my opinion. Of what I have read, I think I know your setup. You have a clean sysnand and a dirty emuMMC, or at least that was your plan. That's mine too, and I think it's the most apropiate way of doing things, because if you need to get rid of a nand, I think it's faster that you just delete the emuMMC instead of restoring your sysnand into a previous clean sysnand.

I hope I helped, and sorry if I didn't explain correctly.

Hey guys,

I did the 'research' a week ago as I installed emuMMC and here you find a great video explaining all ...

Hope it helps :)

Today I learned there's people who are young enough where they never heard of "MBR" for partition tables :(

Thanks for the video! I figured it out on my own though. I just deleted the partition after backing up all the files and then creating two new partitions on my 128gb sd card.

hey I got a problem I want to use a bigger mSD-card (from 128Gb to 400) and now I want to create an image and want to write it to the new unformarted partition, but the image is bigger than the 32GB, how do I shorten the Image, deleting software from my switch?

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
