Wii AV cables are pretty standardised around the world, same connector around the world

Probably not, the US cable is set to NTSC, not PAL as PAL is 50HZ while NTSC is 60HZ, which causes problems with display.

But S-video cables will not work on a PAL Wii without changing the video mode to NTSC (in PAL mode, you get RGB scart instead of S-video, weird how they did that)
The cables otherwise are the exact same.

Do not follow Souliousery's advice - the cables do not get "set" to a video format. It's the console that does that.

Yep ignore Souliousery's advice as pal Wii's have both pal 50hz and pal 60hz modes built into it. And about 98% of pal wii games can be run on the pal 60hz mode. Absolutely fuck all to do with the cable.

Also, while many American TVs do not support PAL signals, the reverse is not the case for European TVs. TVs here have supported NTSC for a long time, even many older CRTs still supported NTSC. Not that it matters as the console is PAL and will output a PAL signal, it's just a good thing to remember.
