i am just wondering how everyone is updating their switch
are you using carts or can you update your system firmware with an .xci file?

while we are on the topic what about .xci dumps and trimmed dumps
do non trimmed .xci files contain system firmware updates?
what about trimmed .xci dumps do these contain system firmware updates?
and is it at all risky as far os being banned to update system FW from a dump if it is possible

oh boy, lets unpack this one step at a time.

if you are using SX, you can update regularly as the hack is not currently patchable.

as far as i know you can't update your system with an " xci file" but i suppose if you really wanted to you could update your system with a game, though as i mentioned, isn't necessary.

Trimmed games contain all the important code of a game and just trim alot of the fat, so i would imagine they would probably contain update code, but i can't be 100% sure.

as far as riskiness is concerned, not really no, it isnt really possible to patch the SX exploit, as it is using something built into the actual device, so you can pretty much update at your leisure.

most of the ban risk comes from updating an actual game that you do not own or going online with a game you do not own.

Updating a game that you don’t own is not leads to ban i guess because it does not contain any unique information. Going online yes it is a different story. You will be banned for sure.

this is 100% untrue, You can absolutely be banned because, yes it does contain unique information because you are contacting nintendos servers with the following:

your unique console id, the game that may or may not have a cert or a suspicious or already banned cert, and that can absolutely lead to a ban.

if you are already using TX OS, then you're already "at risk" of a ban. That's just the nature of using any sort of "unofficial" software. Wether it be CFW, homebrew or backups. However, even if you do get a ban, you will still be able to update your games and your system. When you are banned, you lose eShop and online gaming...not updates. So if you are on lower than current firmware and you want to update to current firmware, then just use wifi on OFW and update (i'm sure you could also update within CFW, but I would just stay safe and do firmware updates on OFW). If you are on a lower firmware and you want to update to a specific firmware, i'd recommend doing that from a physical cartridge (like if you were on 2.3 and you wanted to update to 4.1 for whatever reason, you'd need a cartridge with 4.1 firmware). XCI files MAY work, i'm not sure because i'm already on latest firmware. I just recommend doing system updates on OFW

And? The cert is on the cartridge. If the game not inserted into the switch tell me what "game unique" information will sends to nintendo? Console id doesn't matter in this case because you can update games even after you legally owned but sold it later and the guy/girl who bought it will start use.

ANY game you have, be it digital or physical has a cert and a title ID, both of those things are important to distinguish what game you have, updating your console without having those is a risky game, and you better believe nintendo will know.

what about OTA update , is the latest one compatible with SXOS , i thought i saw posts before saying not to update
that there was some issue, what is the latest FW
i know TX says it is unpatchable but i thought there was some reason not to update system FW from online

Some people want to have their cake and eat it too so they want to play backups without being banned without having the Switch touching the Internet such as through a system update. The other reason is that since we have bootloaders that can prevent fuses from being burnt, it is now better to update using those than with official means because the official method will burn fuses preventing any further downgrades from being done.
