This might be silly but I've researched the mod and i'm familiar with most of it, though something I still don't understand is the firmware requirement. My switch is on 10.1.0 and i'm wondering if i can stay on 10.1.0? Is it even possible to mod on this firmware? Will games require a higher fw even with a hacked switch or can it spoof the current fw?

I'm just used to keeping devices on as low a fw as possible, and because im new to switch modding i dont know if that's even a thing. My switch is a v2 with and rp2040 chip

You are so many firmware behind, latest firmware is 19.0.0, if you have a RP2040 then you can update to 18.1.0 or 19.0.0 but keep in mind 19.0.0 CFW is still in pre-release state.

I’m aware of that. I’m just wondering if there’s a reason I can’t stay where I am.

Fair enough. I thought it could maybe spoof the latest fw version. I guess not.
The switch doesn't have firmware spoofing. The closest we have to that is, (depending on your installer even tho at this point I think all of them have this feature) is running game on the minimum required firmware for said game. For example, pkmn legends arceus minimum requirement is 16.x (i could be wrong but it'll work for the example) but with the most recent update, it "requires" 17.x. so you could install the base and update while sticking to firmware 16.x. granted there could be some instability but it's the closest we have to firmware spoofing

Ok this makes more sense. So either way i'd want to be on the latest firmware to play the latest games. I can imagine i'd be severely limited on 10.1.0.

Out of curiosity is it possible to mod on such an old version? Would i need to find old files from many years ago?

Switch is not like Playstation where it's absolutely in your best interest to be on the lowest firmware possible. If you either use a softmod (version 1) or modchip, it does not matter how many updates Nintendo comes out with you will still be able to mod it while Playstation has been able to lock someone out of newer firmware for 2 1/2 years. You should just update. If not good luck finding homebrew for 10.1 and playing games from 2020 or earlier.

V2 switch needs a mod chip in order to be hacked. So you'll need to get someone to do it for you if don't have hardmod skills.
Firmware doesn't matter as the latest FW has Atmosphere support

Unless your switch is on Firmware (ofw = official firmware) 4.1 or lower, there is no softmod exploits based on firmware. Your gonna need a mod chip. No you won't need old files. Atmosphere supports all ofw.

Being on 4.1 or below with a v2 switch wouldn't change anything though? You'd still need a modchip?

I'm coming from the playstation scene where this is the foundation. I get that it's not really necessary but I don't mind staying on older firmware just in case some sort of exploit is found in the future. Though in saying that it's not worth it if apps and games wont function. Thanks

If you were on Firmware 4.1, you could use the Pegascape exploit. Its an expoit for softmod, But there is no way to downgrade firmware without cfw. So you being on 10.x (don't remember exactly) this would be just info

Yeah i'm only curious as i've not heard about the exploit until right now. So does it work for V2 as well or would all V2 devices be above 4.1?

v2's launch firmware is 7.0.0, so no it won't work on v2, only v1 (patch/unpatched) on firmware 4.1 or lower.

btw the exploit exists all the way up to 7.0.0 iirc, but there has been no development in porting caffine to newer fw.

as for your question, there's really no point staying on old firmware on sysnand, you won't be able to use nso unless you are on latest fw. but if you don't care about online, you can stay on whatever firmware you feel like, maybe one day we'll get another software exploit. Just update emunand to 18.1 and enjoy all the new games

Thank you that's basically what I wanted to know. I don't go online so nso is not important. So all I have to do is update emunand to 18.1? And i can do this without updating sysnand? That's awesome

Yes that's it, update hekate/atmosphere/sigpatches first then use daybreak to update emunand firmware. sysnand is separated from emunand so if you don't want to update/use it it's completely fine

It worked well. Is it fine to delete the fw files from the folder after the firmware was updated? I followed the sthetix guide but it doesnt mention anything after the installation part.
