Depends on your definition of "downloading homebrew". Of course there is homebrew software that can damage the software if used incorrectly.
Create a NAND backup and store in a safe location. If anything goes wrong you will need a hardmod (soldering tiny points) for restoration. Without a backup (or at least the OPT.bin key file) nobody can undo the damage.
